Yeah, the dealer's car is priced high, and it's ways away from you. I got my 06 with 24K miles two Summers ago for $18,000 here in VA.

You almost always do better all around with a private sale. But, sometimes a dealer has the car of your dreams and you just have to suck it up and pay the dealer premium.

THat is a nice car indeed and I would almost be at break even if I could get it. However in my recent experiences, cars in pictures are rarely the way the owners describe them. I have been disappointed multiple times this week. One man's definition of pristine is not the same as another. Case and point this car

2008 HONDA S2000 CR | Manassas Park , VIRGINIA | MAXIMUM AUTO OUTLET - VA - 20111

For anyone interested in a CR. This is not the one you want! I have more details and pictures from my inspection and test drive today. Short story - the whole car is repainted (despite having all VINS), it seems like in someone's basement. there is overspray and compound everywhere and trim pieces started to fall off during the test drive. Engine is pretty rubbish as well.

Well, that is a shame since it is a CR....

Funny...the price is always too high when you don't own it, and not high enough when you're trying to sell it...

dealer is offering 24k + 699 (dealer fee) + 300 (compression test). So basically 25k out the door + tax.

The problem is that the car needs a bumper respray (500), plus new tires (500), plus I might want to get the ap2 wing spoiler removed (500). I haven't even talked about fluids all round and perhaps an alignment. Before you know it this car would cost me 27k+.

Interestingly, that is exactly what 17 Golf GTI Se DSG are going for in my area. I am contemplating if I should just get a GTI for now and then keep searcihng for my perfect S2k over the next several months till one I like appears. I have to turn in my Jetta lease in 5 months so that is enough time. Then I would have a GTI and S2k. It will also help me resolve stuff with Geico over the next several weeks, months..?

I talked to the owner of the above car it already is sold (almost)! I can't compete with local buyers.

Don't buy a GTI, depreciation blows on them. My Mk6 dropped $6k in 18 months and 30k miles. Please don't be afraid of miles, these cars are meant to be driven and 100k is just getting started on them.

There's good deals out there, you just may need to travel a bit. I purchased my first in Kansas, second in Texas and third/current in Florida. What's a $200 plane ticket to get the right car.

I know. But with 7K off MSRP makes it a bit less painful pill to swallow. I am currently looking at ~27K cap cost and 17K dep (54%) after 3 years 10K miles. The lease is going to cost me about 15K over three years in money burnt. I can't imagine an s2000 worth 25k would be worth only 10k after as many miles. So yeah the s2k is a more financially savy option.

My plan is to do the stupid option and get both GTI now and S2k within the next 5 months. It'll give me time to settle with insurance as well.

$27k cap cost isnt $7k off MSRP

Leasing isn't bad, I just hate to throw that money away. If you have the money for both I'd finance a 2015/2016 GTI with a warranty and then get the S.
