Default Nitpicky MY04 owners question (body panel)

A picture would be worth a thousand words, but my digital camera took a dump!

Anyway here goes: where the rear plastic bumper cover meets the metal quarter panel (closest to the rear light housing), there is a kinda sharp little lip (where it starts to hug the light) - does this lip on your 04 stick out ever so slightly on each side from the metal where it joins up to? We are talking a VERY small amount here. Thanks!

ps - There is one reason I hate a new car (wah), and it's because I walk around the damn thing everytime I drive it or walk up to it

pss - They may not be the fastest cars on the road, but I have yet to drive anything as fun, period!

If I understand you correctly, the answer is yes. I would take a picture of my car, however my coworker drained the battery in my camera!

No but really close - look at p3060134...follow the line (top line, where the quarter panel meets the bumper cover) back towards the rear light - when you hit the light that's where it is. Don't knock yourself out, I totally appreciate the feedback though!

chudc,

I think I know what you're talking about. I have a '02 that was involved in an accident a while ago. The rear bumper and one of the rear quarter panels were replaced as a result. After the repairs, I was unhappy because my bumper and quarter panel didn't line up perfectly. Even after a good deal of adjustments, they still didn't line up 100% perfectly. This prompted me to examine that same area on other S2000's.

What I found is that on many S2000's, even brand new ones and those that have never been in accidents, the corner of the rear quarter panel and the corner of the rear bumper do not line up perfectly. The point I'm talking about is where the rear bumper, rear quarter panel, and taillight meet.

I know that many people won't believe this. However, before saying anything, please go examine that area. I will bet that some of you will see what I'm referring to. Others will not. They line up perfectly on some cars but not on others. Usually, the bumper juts out a little, so that it has a sort of underbite compared to the quarter panel. The extent to which the bumper sticks out varies from car to car.

I'm not entirely sure about this, but it seems that hot weather also amplifies this issue. When the weather is really hot, the bumper tends to stick out more. The size of the underbite might also change a little at times, as if it the body panels move while you're driving.

Is this the same thing you're talking about, chudc? If so, then it can be found on all model years. I have no pictures to show this, but I'm not crazy, either. I have seen it on many new cars on the dealer lot, and I've seen it on other cars at S2Ki meets. Again, the location I'm referring to is where the rear quarter panel, rear bumper, and taillight meet.

Personally, I don't think the S2000 has very tight tolerances in that particular area, hence the variation from car to car. The good news is that it doesn't affect anything.
