I am not an expert (but I do play one on this forum), but don't all inline engines suffer from this. When the engine shuts down doesn't it become out of balance. A V engine counterbalances this effect.

He mentions a stalling feeling when he shuts off. Can that be normal? Also, what about the clunking noise when he's in reverse while the clutch is down? I don't remember any noises like that.

The clunking noise is normal. I usually don't get it in reverse, I get it when I put it into first gear. This only happens when the gearbox is cold too. It goes away once it's warmed up.

Diesel engines stop suddenly too due in part to their high compression ratios(17:1). I'm guessing that since the stook is 11:1, the engine is so low in weight, and the motor mounts are relatively stiff, we feel that last kick in the cockpit. Nothing to worry about.

The sensation must vary. Mine shuts down nicely. Sounds like you're experiencing what I've heard called "dieseling." Where the engine fires a few more times due to heat and continued gas flow (esp. due to high compression). I'm not so sure how normal it is. I've had old cars that did this for a full second or more (carburated) but I expect fuel injection should shut off faster.
