I suppose in this day it's unlikely you will get an unexpected clutch failure and I it's not something that you "should" do just as a common practice but why shouldn't everyone at least know emergency procedures?!

(I learned this on ancient VW's BTW where a broken clutch cable was possible at any given moment )

Thanks for the feed back guys...Although I probably won't be attempting the clutchless shifting, it's good to know that it doesn't harm anything if you slip out of a gear without the clutch.

(except for dead start from first).
In an emergency (loss of clutch hydraulics or a finger on the pressure plate), you can slide the transmission into neutral at a stoplight, shut off the ignition and put the car into first gear. when the light turns green, turn on the ignition and press the stater button and off you go.

The best thing to do obviously is to park the car and call for a flatbed to tow you, but in a real emergency, you can use the above procedure to get your car off the road. The whole process is not easy on the drive train, but I have used it once (not on my S) with success.

Taking your car OUT of gear is not a problem--try giving your car a little gas, letting off, and then taking it out of gear a half second later. I'll often coast to a stop light this way.

I wouldn't (like others) recommend shifting into gera this way, as it's easy cause damage.
