Not as impressed with the AP2
vtec hits harder in the ap1 because it makes LESS power than the ap2 does before vtec.
The AP2 has more meat in the pre-vtec powerband, which is why it doesnt kick as hard. IMO thats a good thing. Its called 'power under the curve'

Dude, if you don't like your '07, then do an even trade for a clean 2.0L car and move on with life. You won't find any AP2 owners crying over your decision to go back to an AP1.

If you can't decide between the two, have both in your garage and call it a day

But, other than that, you're right. However, the reason the early F20C's feel like they hit VTEC harder than the later cars has nothing to do with the engine, because they're the same as any other F20C. The difference is the ECU and tuning, which I described earlier.

The OP talked about the "kick" of a very early car, and they have a subjectively larger kick the later cars because of the tuning. It doesn't really reflect a bigger jump in power at all, but it feels (and looks) like it does. FI magnifies the differences even more.
When it comes to torque under the curve the F22C US spec engine probably does have an edge. Since the AP2's are a little heavier it probably helps make up for weight increase a little in the spec US cars, but the F20C's do just fine in the AP2's everywhere else.
But yea, you're thinking is right. The US spec F22C doesn't seem to have as much kick because there is less of an increase in torque, not becuase there is less after VTEC, but because there is more before VTEC.
All you guys in the US need to remember that most of the AP2's still have the F20C.
