I think what he is trying to show is that AHM really didn't need this 2.2L engine to get the torque they wanted. That what I tried to say (albeit poorly) is past posts. It is like AHM was "hell bent" on getting a bump in displacement (probably for marketing purposes) and sacrificed the 9k redline to get it. Some people, myself included, feel like this was a mistake.

True - overall there are quite a few differences between the two versions.

NO, it was a good Marketing decision making the 2.2 for America. They will sell more cars this way. Remember the average enthusiast on S2ki is not the majority of Honda's target, they already have you guys hooked, they're just trying reign in those people looking at the 350Z.

Bravo!!

Finally someone had sense

Honda IS trying to make the car more appealing to the masses and that's going to help us all in the long run. As our car are going to become more and more popular, we will have a higher selection on aftermarket parts and the prices should drop too.

I don't understand this. They only ship about 6000 of them over here each year and they sell each and every one of those. It isn't like if they sell them all they'll make more. This may allow dealers to start gouging on prices again but Honda never saw any of that money anyways. But I really doubt a .2L increase is going to create the kind of market that would allow massive gouging as existed in 99-00.

So Honda has let Nissan set the standard?

I am not so sure Honda will sell more cars this way, as I believe they will lose some customers at the same time.
Just look at how they have been marketing the 'old' S2K - As an uncompromised high tech car with close relation to racing and an exceptional, high revving engine with the world's highest specific output etc etc.

They now have to find something else, which i.a. will put the car even closer to e.g. a Z4, HOWEVER, whithout i.a. the same refinement in interior design and without the extra badge status the customers in this segment might be looking for.

Now that the eye-opening, jaw dropping 9000+ redline and the 120hp/litre arguments cannot be used anymore, what will be Honda's selling points for the S2K, that set it apart from the Z350, Z4, Boxster etc? What can it do, that these cars can't? (Price differences apart, as those vary from country to country, and these cars are in the same segment anyway.)

That said, I doubt selling as many S2Ks as possible was necessarily the main goal of making the S2K itself in the first place. The S2K is a manifestation and marketing of Honda's high tech capabilities, and as such, one way to sell more Civic's and Accords. I think Honda has fallen for the critics of journalists and others who haven't caught the pouint of the S2K, and who do not know how to use it properly. But I am sure the new S2K will be a good car too - although without a quite so impressive data sheet.

I believe that any pure sports car needs to evolve, even if the changes and improvements are minor.

Even if the new change was a 50 pound weight reduction only, that's something. If the engine put out 5 more hp, that's another.

No matter how small the change, the car needs to evolve... that's my belief.
