are oem lsd's supposed to be noisey/clunking

Since the car is used, it can't be known what kind of treatment or service it has had. It may have been abused. It may have had the wrong fluid put in it at one point in time. The wrong fluid can destroy this diff in a matter of days or weeks. I can only suggest that you try some LE 607 (unless it's really cold where you live). and see if this resolves the situation. If it doesn't, I'm afraid you're in for an expensive repair.
