Here is a completely unbiased opinion:
I owned an S2000 and my good buddy owned a 350z soooo lets begin
S2000: Cuts like a knife, I love how it WHIPS around corners like it is (literally) on rails. Insane! Needless to say it is completely underwhelming below 5.5-6k RPM. taking off from a Stop sign was a HUGE annoyance. Top down, summer driving in the Northeast is true bliss.
350z: Obviously a ton more torque, gets up and goes easily, however I was shockingly surprised at how slow it felt- no kick or jolt. I found it strange that could never feel when I should shift. The shifting was garbage, I never felt sure which gear I was in. Turning felt like trying to steer the Titanic around an Iceberg, GOD you can FEEL that weight! Brakes also seemed inadequate, like the car was going to just PLOW through stop signs and red lights.
Verdict: After 2 1/2 years I am buying another S2000, it took selling it to realize how much I TRULY loved it. I'm not opposed to the corvette idea, but for me its C6 or bust, C5's are gross.

Many people have asked this question on the 350Z forums and the responses are understandably completely different:

When looking for an S2000, I considered a C5 Z06. It's a hell of a car on paper, but just doesn't do it for me in reality. Although frankly, I may own one eventually. The only other car I'd consider is an E36/4 M Coupe. The styling is polarizing, but it looks fantastic in person, tons of torque throughout the rev range, very nice and comfortable interior, etc. However, it's an E36 BMW M-car, so you need to overhaul the cooling system every 60k miles and mess around with changing shock mounts, trailing arm and control arm bushings, VANOS problems, not to mention watching out for subframe mount cracking.
IMO, the S2000 is really the best mix of performance, reliability, styling and costs when it comes to true sports cars. Honda did an amazing job of creating a true, modern representation of the classic, purposful, minimalistic sports car.
FWIW,
Leon

only way youll know is to test drive them......
talking to most Z guys they say the 350z is garbage, most prefer the early 90's 300z w/turbo options or the new 370z
that being said i test drove a brand new 370z w/ sport package and did not like it at all, mind you i test drive this before buying the s2000..
the car just does not give me the huge smile the s2000 gives me, and i really didnt see what the fuss was all about. i ran to the s2000 after getting out of it
but all in all, your buying the car, not someone else, go test drive them all!

You'll definitely notice the torque difference. But I'd rather drive a convertible than have more torque
I know they make 350z's in convertible but they just dont look as good to me.
