I too have the gopro mounted on top of the secret compartment using the Modifry mounting kit. Love the video but as soon as the car starts moving with the gear engaged, I get this constant static noise/rattle that's almost like from the drivetrain/chassis vibration. I tried a digital cam and found that the noise was also present in it as well so I'm going to rule out gopro housing/buttons.

Any ideas on how I could minimize/eliminate the drivetrain vibration from ruining my recordings?

How do you guys that are using the Modifry mount dealing with the noise/vibration that's felt on top of the secret compartment?

I'll try to post the crappy videos.

I have a GoPro Hero 2 and am looking for a decent, but affordable external mic. Any recommendations? Is the mic just plug and play or is there a setting in the Hero 2 to disable the internal mic and enable the external mic? To capture engine noise, where is the external mic best placed? How long of a cable to the external mics come with?

Thanks

I use the Audio Technica Pro 24CM myself mounted inside the engine bay and it works great! Mic is plug and play... no special settings for the GoPro needed! The cord for the Pro 24CM is only about 1 foot long, but the Pro 24 model has a longer cable (6 feet I think) if that is what you want. Depending on what type of shot I am going for, I use the Sony voice recorder to capture the audio and sync in post or If I am hooking the mic directly to the GoPro on the front bumper, I use and 1/8" Male to 1/8" Female audio cable to get the extra length I need. Hope this helps!

I find that when not shooting in perfect lighting conditions, the quality is terrible and the picture is extremely noisy.
Also, I like mounting my gopro on friends cars to get external shots!
There is a setting for this. It adjust the lighting from outside. I did not know this before took the video below. Magnum you are a genius.
here is my video in top of the secret/windshield with the adhesive. It have a gtreat shot but I'll prefer the camera a little more inside tthe cabin to have a better view of the track.

In my video the sound is terrible

Swap the video settings to r5 for the 1080p. That'll change the viewing angle to 127 degrees instead of 170 which will make it much better looking. Then you can change the resolution as necessary when uploading to youtube or whatever other site. Here's another forum members video from the console. The track speed and info is recorded using a pbox data logger, and I think using circuit tools for the overlay though I may be unsure. In case you wondered.

Also, which backing plate are you using for the in car recording? You should have the open one for the best sound inside. Though the best sound still isn't great, but it's....manageable.

That's nice with the track and MPH

Thanks for the info. Yeah the 24CM Pro may be better for me with the 6' cable. Whats the price for the 24CM Pro?

I guess I am alittle confused, do I need the Sony voice recorder too? I'd like to get some basic GoPro videos without all of the typical wind noise. I'd be mounting the GoPro inside the cockpit, and perhaps on the hood and/or trunk. That's really all I am trying to do.

Thanks

The reason I have the voice recorder is for when I am using an ND Filter on the GoPro to help blur the road detail at speed (Looks a little more realistic). I put a Blurfix and ND filter on my waterproof case so I have no way to hook the mic directly in the GoPro. Now, if I do not care about the road detail being so sharp for the particular shot I am doing, then I just use the non waterproof case and plug it into the cam directly. I was able to snag the Pro 24CM new for $20 on eBay, I think the Retail price is $60? Good Luck!

Glad I found this thread! I just got a Hero2 and have been experimenting with mounting. For in car, I think 1080p medium angle, spot metering on is the best. Everything else I've tried makes the outside look too over-exposed. Not such an issue with the top down though.

Boofster... if you look up Snake River Prototyping Blurfix you will know what I am talking about. I have that on my waterproof case to help with the blurry images that the GoPro produces underwater and also to eliminate the jello effect and propeller blur when I am mounting to the planes that I fly. Another added bonus is when you put on an ND (Neutral Density) filter, it slows the shutter speed of the GoPro down some and makes for a better sense of speed in the video when you mount it to your S2000. Here is a picture of the Blurfix and ND filter all mounted up on the front bumper of my S2K.

That eliminates propeller distortion?? That is awesome. Might have to buy that.
