what ever control i give up by locking up the brakes i can get back by pumping the brake pedal and manually duplicating ABS.
if the car cannot over come whatever pile of snow built up during lockup, that car has no buisness being on the road for those conditions.

theory is one thing, driving in chicago is another.

especially when the city has no money left to plow and salt the roads.

Seems to be being smart and trying to stay safe are still the main issue.
pay attention watch traffic and expect the people around you to make mistakes and plan for them.
my driving motto and i stick to it

I didn't say you couldn't get over the mound. I just said it was making things harder for yourself. Needless to say, if it works for you, more power to you. I dont drive that way, and it isnt "theory", it's just my driving style which is different from yours.

I've driven many hard winters here without ABS and I find it to be handy *at times*. Most of the time I brake just fine without setting it off.

definitely get snow tires if you do....or instead spend the money on a beater for winter...the S is too nice to be in that mess.

ya i hate to jump on you here but you can't 'duplicate' ABS manually. you can come close, sure, but the computer is faster and better bottom line. or as fast, consistently, every time... which amounts to the same thing since you are human and therefore imperfect and inconsistent. but hey, it's your car. do what you like.

I drove mine last winter in Mpls, MN. I used Blizzaks (WS-60). I had some issues in stop in go traffic when pointed uphill. I had to be very light on the gas and feather the cluch or else the ass would try to sidestep. Other than that, it drove like a charm. It's also great fun in empty parking lots. I still have my WS-60s. They're in good shape. There are probably 2k miles on them, tops. PM if interested.
