Purple Haze,

I recently went on a drive with 24 other S2000 owners through the hills and twisties of Southern Indiana. We went a total of 164 miles over a period of several hours. Most of this was in 3rd and 4th gears at speeds ranging from 40-95mph for extended periods of time. There were stretches where we were almost flat out for up to 20 minutes at a time and at very high revs. It was the most fun I have ever had behind the wheel of a car. The car ran perfecty. So did the other 23. Enjoy the car. It will serve you well.

I haven't done it for more then 5 mins in the vtec land.
But i would check the oil after hitting vtec land for awhile on the next fill up.

Keeping the car out of VTEC is quite difficult here on the Autobahn! Thankfully fuel is so expensive that I discipline myself to keep under 180kmh in most cases, but I feel a lot more secure and alert at 210 or so. (7000rpm)

I wonder if there is a lot of wear & tear during frequent VTEC state changes. Sometimes on the track, I'll drop out of VTEC on some corners.

I vtec quite often, redlining the engine 2-3 times a day. I cruise on the freeway in & out of vtec all the time.

I think that I'm a normal "enthusiast" driver of the car. I feel as long as you change the oil when you're suppose to you're alright. Using synthetic oil should help.

I think it really doesnt matter as long as you do warm-up and cool-down and change your oil frequently with top grade synthetic.

I drive my cars really hard and as long as you take good care it is really hard to see engine failure on German/Japanese engine unless you do somthing really bad(mis-shift..ect)

I have VW Golf 3 with 100k mile back home(Asia) and I do top speed run every day which engine runs at 6k rpm for 20min round trip. That's 40min run of 6000 rpm(6200rpm is the redline) almost everyday.

Is engine ok? oh yeah even with that kind of mileage car STILL runs factoty specified top speed(115mph)

Also I had two Audi's 1.8T which was runnning 18psi for 60k miles on both cars. No problems at all even tho I had many track and autocrosses.

For Japanese motor, I really havnt heard of many engine failure while I heard many GM & Ford motor's engine gasket failures which causes coolrant leak into engine cylinders with high milage.
It is pretty common failure on many american motors with high milage.

purple haze -

hey fellow san diegan ... why don't you give me a PM, and i'll take you out in the mtns to show you how tough our little cars really are. i took a drive on one of my favorite routes over the weekend - up mount laguna on sunrise highway (S1). i was in vtec for loooooong periods of time. a nice guy in a 67 vette pulled out of the way as i screamed by at about 8500 (i won't say what gear), and he gave me the thumbs up ... as did two guys sitting on the wayside on a pair of crotch-rockets. the wail of that engine at 6-9k echoing off those canyon walls is amazing .... and will quickly make you forget about all this durability debate!

by the way ... i believe it to be very durable.
