Default RPM

Hello all
As a new owner of an S2000 I've never owned a more fun car to drive, now I just need to learn the proper way to drive it. I've never owned a car that red-lined so high so my question is what is your most efficient and cost effective rpm to run at, to shift at. When cruising what's the best rpm to run at. How do you get the best performance from this car. Teach me everyone please. JimandDeb

Love this car!!!!!!!!!!!

The owner's manual tells you what speed to shift at, but if you're going for the most fuel efficient shifting by RPM, naturally, it'd be at lower RPMs- usually around the 4000 mark. That's been my experience, but I've only had my S for a month. You just have to listen to the engine and hear when it wants to shift. Based on my driving habits, when I'm driving leisurely, I shift around 4000rpm. Seems like when you aren't revving it hard, there's an initial "pre-VTEC peak". But if you are looking to speed, revving it hard will put the engine past this peak and send it into VTEC. Just my experience. Listen to the engine, it just takes time.

At cruising speed (6th gear around 65mph) your RPMs will probably run in the high 3000s. But always drive in the highest gear possible for the most gas-saving driving.

read the manual first. if this is a new car then dont red line it for the first 400 miles.
also PLEASE check your oil, check it every other day. these engine do consume a lot of oil especially if they are new.

wait for 3 bars on the temp gauge before going anywhere near vtec land. or the rev restrictor will come on.

If your wanting to puch the car, redline will 'bounce' when looking at the tach. it will do this twice and on the 3rd time you WILL hit the rev limiter. optimum shift is thust after the 2nd bounce (i have found)

Please be careful with the car. the amount of new owners that crash because they underestimate how the car reacts under certain conitions. i would advise you to get a track day booked or driver training to get used to the limits in a safe condition.

it will take some time to get used to the high rev engine. Just be sure to check your oil levels, let it warm up and enjoy.

Lower revs is the most cost efficient way to drive it, but it was designed to really perform at higher Rpms.

Start going to the local meets, talk to some of the other drivers about their experiences with the car. This car is truly amazing but as with anything new, learn it first, which translates to hours behind the wheel, under different road conditions. Enjoy it.
