Like others have said. Would have to be the frame or something like that. Everything else is easily replaced or fixed. My engine is on it's way out. Rather than be bummed I am just excited to get an F22 in there and have a very low mileage engine in my s2k now. Replaced almost all parts at this point besides the chassis itself once the engine and trans are swapped out this winter.

I don't have "breaking point" set in stone, but if my S became so damaged that I decided to replace it, I would replace it with another S. It's a no brainer for me so I don't worry about major damage because I know I'll still be driving an S.

I am concerned about the future availabilty of parts for an older, somewhat limited-production car.

No problems so far - http://rci.rutgers.edu/~mocker/s2000...e_expenses.htm

and is there a part of the car that could break that would make an owner give up on the car and move on due to cost and hassle?

or do you guys intend to just keep replacing whatever breaks and continue on?
One great aspect of this car is the durability and total cost of ownership. Nothing really breaks and when it does the replacement parts are usually cheap.

So, no there is nothing in particular that would cause me to move on because something broke... Outside of a bent frame, the last reason I would sell this car is due to a repair cost.

I was having this conversation with a "normal" person the other day when discussing transmission problems. They just didn't get why I wanted to go to the trouble of fixing major problems on an old high milage car. It's truly one of those "If I have to explain you wouldn't understand" situations.
Haha. I have dealt with people like that on occasion. A co-worker of mine could not believe that I paid $7,500 for a Toyota Tacoma TRD 4x4 with 130,000 miles on it. Even when I explained to him that I actually got a great deal on it. I suppose to people used to driving Fords and Chevy's anything over 100,000 miles has got to be about to fall apart, right? lol
I am in a similar boat- but I paid 14k + traded in my paid off 2000 chevy s10 extreme for an 05 trd sport tacoma w/leather interior and 120k miles. i paid a little more than it was worth but it was in very good condition and had a tow package so I can tow my car to the track. I am completely happy with both of my two vehicles and will just replace whatever goes wrong on either of them. But at the same time I am mechanically inclined with a pretty decent tool selection and a garage to work on them (just no time to because of school )

But to answer your question (which is the same thing everyone else has said) frame damage or severe fire damage.

Frame damage would be the final blow for me. But if my back went out, I'd probably find another ride. I have given rides to people who could barely get in the car. If I ever get that bad I may have to hang it up.

I'm already collecting parts, knowing they will likely have to be replaced eventually. You can get some used stuff cheap if you're patient. I already have a spare starter, alternator, fuel pump, exhaust manifold, cat and cat back exhaust.

spare things like starters and alternators are good ideas because aftermarket versions are crap (and still ridiculously expensive)
