Still, if someone knowingly damages your property and it is serious then do what you have to and are supposed to do - get the info, find witnesses and go after them, but coppers don't need to be called for a petty door ding...period.
The amount of damage done is irrelevant. From a legal perspective, if somebody else does something that damages you or your property, they have a legal obligation to do what it takes to make you "whole" again, or restore you to status ex ante.

Hey Guru,

I am happy you stood up for yourself. I admire that and am even more glad that you lived to tell the tale.

Have you been in the AMEDD you whole time in the Service? You sound like you just got back from a deployment. Where did you go and welcome back.

SARmedic,

I have been at in an AMEDD my whole career. I put in to leave, but my papers fell through. Once I specialized in MRI, I wasn't going to be leaving Wally World anytime soon! Where did you do your time?

I have been to a few places. Nothing too exciting! Not enough time to take it all in. Besides, my ex was 5 and a half months along with my daughter, Lilly. I came back before she was born in August of 2003.

Racer Chic,

Why don't you go to American University instead? They have a nice Law program. And I didn't mean to offend anyone out there who may be a lawyer...I just had to take a stab I was still fuming

Out-

Clearly the punks who jacked with his car were at fault, but they damaged property and from the sound of his story it was not intentional.

if i accidently flicked my cigarette and the wind carried it and it landed on your mulch and have ur house burn down with your family trapped inside... it would make it ok? i mean it wouldn't be intentional right?

that is an extreme case and maybe its not even what u are saying but thats what it sounds like

accident or not, i would expect someone to fix a dent on my car. i donno about you but if i damaged a persons car i would pay for it, becuase i wuold expect the same.

If that is what happened I would not expect you to pay for it. It was an accident and certainly not negligence, and from the sound of your statement, if it was your house you'd probably sue the manufacturers of the cigarette and the mulch. That is just wrong.

Stuff happens, and quiteoften there is nobody to blame.

Stuff like this is why this country is turning to crud..

Jeez so many people are talking about more than one thing. If you are a considerate person, and you are being careful when you open your door and you slip and ding a door, that is an "accident". Typically that won't leave a big ding or a dent or remove paint - maybe it would leave a scratch. I think we can all live with that and understand the risk. What makes us angry is just complete cluelessness or malicious door whanging. Just like drunk driving - that's not an accident - neither is flicking a burning cigarette out a window. It seems like an "accident", but its just stupid.

I think people are just saying they would appreciate being shown the the same consideration thier life and property as they show to others. When its not done, its disappointing.

And yes, when its appropriate (common sense), I agree people should pay for their mistakes, including the paint removing door ding, accident or not. Some people (well within their rights) would like to take more action to enforce compensation.

Personally, I'm not going to stress over a door ding, there's already enough stress in life, but kudos if you've got the time and energy - GO FOR IT! Help us clean up the gene pool - make people aware of the financial danger in dinging doors!! I appreciate it. Maybe the next 200 guys who park next to me will think twice. (I doubt it but don't let that stop you.)

And yes to agree with much of the other sentiment that people are trying to express - there is way too much litigation and anger over small things - so some of us try to save it for when it matters. A door ding is not fatal.

That said, I park my car carefully to minimize risk and keep my fingers crossed.

Again no argument - somebody dings your car - please do what you need to feel better about it.

So if I ACCIDENTALLY rear end you, I don't have to pay for it? I wasn't being negligent, it was an accident, accident's happen.

I don't see how the amount of damage is relevant. If my car door gets dinged by accident, it's not MY fault. Legally, the fault lies with the person who hit my car door. If they hadn't hit the door, there would be NO ding, therefore they have a legal obligation to set it right.
