i dont think i have any damage. every time i shift 3rd redline to 4th, the rpm drops to 7000. im dead certain i shifted 3rd redline @ 6000 but it shot up to 9000+. could it be because i was going downhill, accelerating at the time? probably. anyway, should i still get a compression test to make sure i didnt warp any valves? i was quoted $65 for this service.

The rev limiter does prevent damage by cutting fuel when you accelerate past 9,300 rpm. However, there is no "rev limiter" when you surpass 9,300 rpm either by missing a downshift (shifting from 5th to 2nd when you meant to shift from 5th to 4th) or by going downhill and letting momentum take you way above 9,300 rpm.

Use that clutch to save the engine if you miss a downshift or over-rev by downhill momentum.

Also have a healthy dose of luck. You can get away with something over 9,300 sometimes, but at 10,000 rpm to 11,000 rpm or so you're looking at an expensive repair which is not covered by your warranty.
