i live in apartments and I rent a garage ($40/month) and it's well worth the security.
Though, I have to agree that if a theif wants your stuff, he's going to get it.
Back in 2002 When I had my '00 Z28, I modded it out, Cam, headers, etc. Among my stuff, was a shiftlight and tach, well that attracted some scumbags. They broke in to the Z, took that, then the tools in the trunk, then they proceeded to open my hood and take my CIA, and other things. It was a terrible day, but it taught me that if you mod your car and it shows from the outside, theifs in apt.complexes WILL notice.
Be wary, don't attract unnessary attention.
