When I graudated college, (I never owned a car berfore that) I ask my parents for some money for a car. My mother replied "The bank is up the street."

I worked at Wendys, Popeyes, Burger King, McDonalds, Construction, Washed Dishes and every other crap job you can think of during college.

Oh yeah, when I finally bought a new car it was an '89 Escort GT. It was the fastest new car I could afford.

Damn I got ripped...

PariS2k-

Please note that I said in my first post that I was jealous. No two ways around that. Besides, that the point of my email was really to give the guy a good natured rib and then caution him to be very careful.

BobJ - I am very happy for you as well. I would have loved for my parents to buy me a car period, let alone an S2K. My destiny was a little different. I am the grand child of four immigrants to this country. I am the first one in my family to graduate college (my younger sister, I am very proud to say was the second). I had to bust my ass in high school for a 3.9 gpa. I worked summers, holidays, etc. for spare cash. My grades, extra-curriculars, etc. were enough to get me into a good school on a partial scholarship. I busted my ass in University to ensure my employment afterwards. Hopefully, you see a trend here.

I have worked very hard for what I have. Yes, it took me until I was 28 until I could afford this wonderful car. My reality is that I have a mortgage, student loans, a wedding to save for (again my fiance' and I are paying for our own because I know how hard my parents have had to work to get to where they are and I couldn't fathom burdening them with this), etc.

So... am I jealous? Yes. No bones about it. I only hope that anyone whose parents buy this car for them (partially or otherwise) appreciate that gesture for what it is. You guys are very lucky. And before you get on me about having to pay $10K of your own while trading in your Impreza, let me ask you this. Who paid for your Impreza?

Enough of that. Enjoy the car, be careful, and take a moment to realize how fortunate you are.

I have a hard time being jealous. I mean, I already own the car! (personally financed) It is not his fault that his parents are well-to-do, and if i was in his parents shoes i'd... No wait, I wouldn't buy him an S2K but thats just me.

tom, not preaching here but be careful in this car. Id recommend drivers school and take it to a few autox's to find the limits of the car in a controlled environment. You'll learn more in the 6min of autoxing than you will in 6mos of street driving.

So can anyone's parents help? I need a damn boat.

I agree with whomever said a car is more appreciated if you worked hard for it. It is psycologically correct. Just like people are more likely to take care of private things than public ones.

And for the record. When my children which aren't born yet become of driving age. I will not buy them a nice car. Every kid in San Marino had a BMW or Mercedes at their 16 birthday. My kid can freeload off them for ride.
