Plans for the Future.
I suppose in the end, one will do what one pleases regardless of the sage advices offered here in this forum. Let common sense rule! I think it is always better to start off with a safe and affordable vehicle that the insurance companies recommend for teen drivers. However, everyone makes his or her own decision in the end and that results in consequences.
You never know, he may have a dune buggy that he drives around a farm or something like that. I grew up driving a go-kart. Not racing; just for fun in the neighborhood. That gave me an interest in driving. Maybe he's the next Michael Schumacher...we just don't know, and no one should say he can't have a car.
I'm sixteen now... and as much as I'd love an S2000 (for Christ's sake I'm practically obsessed with this car) it's just not practical at all. High-powered RWD manual cars are quite difficult for first-time drivers... my dad's mustang is hard enough. All I have right now is a crappy ol' Ford Tempo, but even if I had been working my ass off for the past two years I wouldn't go straight for an S. Take it one step at a time, or at least learn the basic rules of the road first... I wouldn't want to put in all of that effort just to wreck it shortly after getting it...
But I will tell you one thing... I will own one eventually, it's just going to take alot of work. Good luck.

I got one when I was 17, drove it for three and a half years without one single incident. My older brother borrowed it and wrecked it within 5 minutes. Maturity level does play a very big role here. Will, are you calling my parents stupid? After living with someone for 16+ years, his parents know him better than you ever will... Some of the comments you made weren't necessary at all.
He's 14 and starting a two-year plan to get a car. I'll bet that's more than you can say about yourself! So please, tone down your reality checks sir.

On a side note, I do know what I'm talking about; my fiancee's parents made her drive an old Volvo 240 the first two years she was driving. She did fine. Having proven herself, they promply bought her the first BMW Z3 in New Mexico. Six months later they bought her an M3.
Prove yourself first, then treat yourself to the reward. OR get someone else to treat. Whatever.

I'm glad you have a couple more years to think about your choice of a first car. Good luck!!
