Default please help me thank you

I just purchased an 04 rio yellow s2k with 13,000 miles. It's absolutely perfect. But there's one thing about it. When i unlatch the top and press the convertible button the top doesn't go down. It went down after i tried again after i turned the engine on and backed up a little bit. Does the engine need to be on for the top to go down? why does it only work sometimes and not always? thanks so much.

Could be the switch or the motor relay, I always check the load first, because if something goes wrong electrically, that's usually the first thing to have an issue. Check the motor relay. Not sure if it's located on the motor itself or in the fuse panel next to your left knee under the dash.
