I travel light.

Manual and spare quart of oil in the tool tray.
Sunglasses in the front of the two trays in the secret compartment. Registration and insurance papers under the elastic strap in the glovebox.
FRS/GMRS radio in the secret compartment.
iPod on the passenger seat.
Towel, umbrella, and light jacket in the trunk.

oh yeah,

7) I keep a mini California car duster in my trunk-- a must if you have a Berlina black. it gets dust off the dash as well as the exterior. great for when you're driving more than a few miles to pick up someone special; pull into a gas station, clean the windshield, dust off the car and assuming you washed the car the day before (and you didn't go through any mud puddles), you can pull up with the dash and exterior looking impeccable. (I might consider putting a spray bottle of Z-6 detailing spray and a white towel in the trunk too, but I haven't quite gotten that anal... yet.)

also, I do the same thing with my odometer. Trip A is for noting the mileage between fill-ups. I keep a pen in the elastic strap of the secret compartment door and write it on the receipt from every gas fill up in this format: Odometer (Trip A). Be sure to put the pen in the strap in such a way that it is oriented with the writing point facing upwards to prevent any nasty spillage when the secret compartment gets heated up in the sun.

I bought fix-a-flat and put it in my trunk yesterday. thx for the idea. residue or not, I'd like to have this option when putting on the donut is too big a hassle or otherwise not possible. I put it in the hollow spot in the foam between the OEM car jack and stuff. is there something else that was supposed to go there that is missing (that should've come with the car)? in my car, that's just a hollow spot.

epnfrn-- does a long-time subscription to Scientific American count?

ralper-- thx.

lot's of great tips here everyone. thanks! keep 'em coming...

1- Read your owner's manual if you haven't already done so.

2- Don't rely on the e-brake, always leave the car in gear.

3- Carry a couple paper funnels & a quart of oil with you at all times. Always get the receipt for these quarts of oil. Make sure the receipt shows that you purchased oil and not generic "grocery". Save the receipts along with your maintenence records. When checking oil, always clean the dip stick and then put it back in to get the correct reading. The first reading could be deceptive.

4- Carry a towel in the spare tire. I use it often to clean up the top and rear window bofore putting the top down after rain. The towel can also be used to clean the headlights after driving in the rain.

5- Top down driving in light rain is FUN! I'm really hooked on this. I've found that the car's dynamics keep light rain from getting in the cabin.

6- Apply RainX to all windows, sideview mirrors and headlights.

7- As for parking, I always park in lighted areas. I also avoid parking by empty parking spots since you never know how the other person will park the car later.

8- Avoid parking next to soccer moms in parking lots and do not drive in front of them on the highway.

9- Adjust your HIDs so they do not blind on coming trafic. If they cannot see you they could hit you. You should check your HIDs after installing a sub in the trunk or after any suspension mods.

10- Carry your cell phone on your person. In case you have an accident you won't have to search for your cell phone and it won't get tossed out the window, etc. I've learned this the hard way, others may not be able to relate to this till it's too late.

Always use a paper towel, paper napkin, or tissue to check your oil with. Using a "rag" may snag the dip-stick. Any "rag" material that may have been snagged will enter the engine via the dipstick and won't dissolve. On the other hand, paper towels, paper napkins, or tissue will.

Tips I've learned:

1) Do not expose your car to sunlight.
2) Do not drive your car.
3) Do not touch your car.
4) Keep the car in an air sealed plastic wrap at all times. Do not open the plastic seal!
5) Keep the car in a temperature controlled room. The room should be free of all dust, pollens, and contaminants. You should only enter the room when wearing one of those space suits they use in the semiconductor company labs.

That's it! Enjoy your car.

. . . Seriously, everyone just enjoy your car, like it's meant to be. It's going to get old and get scratches no matter what you do.

Where to store owner's manual, registration, etc:

Ask a Honda dealer for the nice embossed vinyl folder they give out with Certified used cars, instead of the cardboard envelope they give with new ones. Strange but true.

It's sturdy and custom fits the manual and papers. The folder can go in the back half of the top compartment.

My salesperson was thoughtful enough to provide with the new s2k this summer, after the cardboard one two years back with a new Accord. You'd think Honda might figure this one out.
