So how much can the upgraded street gears take compared to the dogbox?
also why would the dogbox wear out faster then stock if it is of a higher durability?
is it because there are no synchros or is it just the nature of the beast.

the syncro kit that i have can hold up to 500whp that i know of. There are some subarus that have gone close to 700whp with a helical set. so its hard to say. The dogs can tend to wear out faster just because of the fact that it is a much harder engagement. Instead of having abunch of little teeth angled to smoothly merge together, you have four big flat blocks that interlock with each other.

The dogs wear BECAUSE there's no synchro. It's like the crash boxes in the 40's. They wear depending on how well you rev match. Do a good job so engagement's clean and they'll last a long time. Do a crappy job and you'll grind the edges off the dogs until the gears won't stay engaged any more.

Pictures of a dog box guts for a civic. Hmm that would work in my civic!

Wouldn't be interested, sounds reasonable for a track car, but not for a Daily Driver. If I was going to upgrade the tranny, I'd drop 1000-2000 rpms off 6th gear, so that it was quieter on the highway. Also it would be nice to speed up the 1-2 shift. I always have to pause half an instant for the synchros.

The only upgrade I'm contemplating is to switch the secondary reduction gears out for an AP2 set to give me effectively lower ratios on all gears.

You know if you can match revs well, you don't need the clutch to shift on a normal tranny, right? Try it, it's fun
uuhh i'd better not.......hahaha

What do you mean by effectivly lower ratios in all gears. Plus PPG is also making a new secondary reduction gear so who knows what that will change on the car. All my gears as of right now are streched out. but i love it i get better gas milage as a bene.

There's a secondary reduction gear on the end of the countershaft I believe. The AP2 tranny's use a lower ratio secondary reduction which gives them an effective 4.30 final driver (4.1 actual FD plus the reduction of the secondary). Seems like a relatively cheap way to give me "gears" without having to tear into the diff.

I think I could do it without even taking the tranny out by unbolting the extension housing and doing the swap from under the car. Looks like it's $2-300 for the parts.

Might make it a winter project.

ahh ok the gears would take you the opposite direction from where you want to go because all of mine got streched out. so i am planning on putting a 4.44 or something close to that to make up for it since im not turbo.
