Default Power Lag/Loss at VTEC engagement (and other times)

I had a major problem with my '00 at around 17,000 miles, I started experiencing a power loss, lag, stutter, whatever at around 6100RPM, I initally thought it was a straight VTEC issue and had it in to the dealer, there were no error codes.. the problem was spookily intermittent and would never apper in the presence of a mechanic, I replaced the MAP sensor, but the problem got steadily worse/more frequent after FOUR trips to two seperate service deptsand the loss of use of my car for over a week.. turns out I had a bad fuel pump (fuel boost pump) which may have been caused by the car being driven so little the it's first 2 yrs (under 4000 miles) causing the rubber components of the pump to degrade, hope this saves someone a headache who may exp. a similar prob, Mike javascript:smilie('')

did they dissect the pump in order to determine to the actual cause (dry rot?) or was that just an educated guess? this could not have been an inexpensive diagnose/repair.

Although an interesting prospect, I doubt they would go to that effort and further expense. They most likely determined that there was insufficient fuel pressure from the "IN" fuel line and just went ahead and changed it out. I'm sure they checked the regulator before going ahead. But with some Honda techs, one just never knows for sure.

The problem with the diagnosis was the problem's intermittent nature, the pump itself was bad, but was failing gradually, which is why I noticed it in high fuel demand situations first, but the kicker was that most of the time it was just fine, the car had to become almost undrivable for the techs to finally isolate it, and then there was not a pump available in the SE so further delays there. I'm giving Honda a 'C' for this one, but now I am going to have to take it in for the 1st/2nd synchro problem, which I just found out about on here yesterday, as the dealer told me that was "NORMAL" for that they get an 'F', Mike

I had a similar problem and when I took it in for scheduled maintenance (including a fuel filter change) it went away. So I just assumed the fuel filters were the problem and wrote it off.
