Premature VTECulation
okay, im bad...i moved by post to a previous thread and posted it here as a new topic...I appologise if this question has been asked before, but im interested to hear the responses from those out there who just couldnt resist..
Okay then, heres the question....
Which of you out there either didnt know (ignorance being no defense in the eyes of the law), didnt care, or simply couldnt wait until the end of the break-in period to VTEC?
And of those of you who did VTEC prior to the recommended break-in period (come on, you know who you are!)...have you encountered any subsequent problems that you attribute to your lack of self-restraint?
Me? No, of course I didnt VTEC before 1000kms...but having said that, it was a daily battle with myself, and there were many occasions when it could have gone either way!

I admit I'm a premature VTECulator
I plead guilty on all three counts. The good news is that I haven't had a single drivetrain issue and she burns no oil. I seriously doubt there will be any problems in the future that might be attributed to it.
Most of the catatrophic problems occur during and just shortly after break-in because they were broken when they left the factory. After 17K miles, many spirited, I think mine's ok. Problems that might occur would likely be wear and age related. It would be difficult to know for sure if a part failed 5K miles before it would otherwise.

I know this OT. just wanted to say hi.
I must say, dispite the number of VTEC cars I've owned, I've NEVER suffered from premature VTECulation. In fact, I'm only reading this thread for a FRIEND so I might be able to offer some advice.

I think this idea that 1000 km or 600 miles is an ABSOLUTE turning point is silly.
First of all, do you think North American cars are permitted to VTEC 35 km earliier? 600.0 miles = 965.4 km !
Second of all, I cannot imagine a break-in adaptation in the engine that isn't gradual. VTECing an engine with 20 miles on it can't be the same as one with 200 miles or 2,000 miles. However, full break-in doesn't occur until about 5,000 miles. I gather this from the reports that we should not change to synthetic oil until then, and from the reports that performance of the engine continues to improve after 2,000 miles.
Third, I wonder if anyone can show ANY data on early VTECing causing damage or shortened engine life.
Having said all that, my new short block never saw 5,000 rpm until it passed 500 miles, never saw 6000 rpm until 600 miles, never saw 7,000 rpm until 700 miles, and now at 850 miles on the block it still has not seen 8,000 rpm.
But when I've got a couple thousand miles on this engine, I'll see everything !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You're exactly right Barry!
And don't forget, A LOT of people ( not neccesarly here ) still believe in the Break it in like your gonna drive it theory.
Truth is (at least mine) if your gonna have a problem, its gonna happen regardless of how you broke it in. As long as comman sense was part of the equation.
