question for some 4.77 owners
I've chimed in a many a times in this wonderful exerpt with questions pertaining to specified situations that regard gears.....
......since I don't do much drag......and haven't auto X'd....i'm guessing i fall under the category of street racer....4.44's might def be my choice.....i won't be doing much 0-30 and i'll need some top end.....
my only concern is my hypothetical situation that deals with going from like a 20 roll......that's already in the middle of a 0-30 mph run......with 4.77's.......I'd be in a hole wouldn't I

For many aspects of your application but from just your 20mph roll aspect, you will be right at the start of Vtec, which is where you want to be. The 4.77 will be on the tail end... and out of Vtec in second gear. He won't have enough to pull you out of Vtec with racing a 4.44 car-- a stock one yes) His 4.77 power burst where his peak power range is in the rpm is shorter now from the gear choice, which is a disatvatage, this is not what you want. You what the fattest power curve your engine can pull so you are in your peak power range longer, the longer this is, the more time your wheels are under peak power. You create this effect by gearing. 4.10's spread it to thin for the engine output but 4.44 i'll say again are right in the sweet spot.
It doesn't make sense to go to a gear ratio that its main focus is to change the power curve to favor the lower rpms in an all out wide open scenaro such as drag racing. Commuter traffic --sure) When you say lose top end, your right but its not top speed Im talking about --though you will lose that too, its top end of the power curve where the s2000 has its advatage out of the box, your making an even peakier range now with the 4.77 so rowing through the gears as fast as you possibly can and the tranny can handle is going to be something your going to want to get very good at because its your only chance at keeping the 4.77 car in its range and competative. Knowing this I don't see this gear choice as an upgrade and see it more as shooting yourself in the foot and then expecting to run a sprint. haha..
If you lined up the two 4.77 and 4.44 in this situation at a 20 roll, its a perfect example of the 4.44 having the advantage and taking the win from 20 to 60..80... 100.. 130... 150, what ever speed because it has a fatter tq curve and a gearing that is not to low and not to high to allow the engine to spin the wheels the fastest....
I am not sure you are refering to my quote but I spoke with HTG and in my case he thought it was best. I do not drive lots of HWY and I am not sure I will FI, if I do I it will be a low HP kit no more than 325. I am awaiting my 4.77's, I ordered them Cryo and renforced. I do and have taken my car to the track and had problem with bog. The car is pretty week of the line, it is pretty hard with the current gearing to launch. I ran in the mid 14's. I feel with lower gearing and more more strength my results will be better.
Here is a link 4.10 vs 4.77 I think it would be closer with 4.44 but similar results.

The first race both the silver and blue s2000 had 4.77... and look at the difference in outcome. The second race the white car had stock gearing and hung on almost more respectively then the silver guy with 4.77 in the first race, in the first race the silver 4.77 got the jump and the other 4.77 car came around him, thats a pretty big difference. For all tense and purposes if the two losers were to run each other I think white 4.10 one might have won against the silver 4.77 car. Not that I think 4.10 will pull on a 4.77 stock for stock, but it just goes to show how many other factors are in play here on the vid. There are some power differences between the cars for one and this is a big factor in gearing therory.
