Questions on AP2 tranny vs 4.56 gears on AP1
I would like to hear some opinions on this one: What are the pros and cons of swapping an AP2 tranny versus getting 4.56 gears for my AP1?
Basically I'm deciding whether it's worth the trouble of sourcing an AP2 tranny (probably very difficult given where I live), instead of just swapping my axle gears to 4.56.
From my understanding, AP2 tranny is better because:
1. Looks like AP2 gearing and 4.56 gears give you similar vehicle speeds at each gear's redline for the first 4 gears. The 5th and 6th gears are where the AP2 tranny would be "better" than changing my gears to 4.57, as the car would rev lower @ 80mph with AP2 tranny -- since I don't spend much time on constant high speed cruising, I don't care too much if the 4.56 gears rev higher than the AP2 gears do.
2. No need to shove in the speedo calibrator & everything's OEM
4.56 gears are better because:
1. A bit cheaper to get than AP2 tranny?
2. Could also get reinforced diff while at it
Other than that, what are the other pros and cons of each?
In this case, lets say stronger synchros aren't a concern/factor. Chances are I will need a mechanic to build the diff for me, as HTG wouldn't be able to ship that 80lb diff across the world. So ease of installation isn't quite a pro for 4.56 gears either ...
Thanks guys
