i'm a new s2000 owner and sadly completely oblivious about the specs except what's written on the manual...anyways, i've recently noticed the check engine light blinking on and off longer than the other lights when the key is inserted into the ignition. has anyone else noticed this or is this common?

It's in your manual. It's a friendly reminder to have your oil changed and whatever maintence. You can check in the manual how to turn this off.

Are you sure it's the "Check Engine Light"? If this is blinking, you're in big trouble and should stop the engine immediately and have it towed into the dealer.
I think you must mean the "Maintenance Required Light", right? In this case, it is as "thunderchicken" just said. Reset it and go by the manual for your maintenance schedule. The MRL is just a reminder and most people would not leave their oil changes that long anyway.

I had similar problem as soon as I went over 5,000 miles.
What you should do is reset the system by press down the trip
button for your odometer, as you start the ignition. You might
have to try it few times. Good luck.

ALSO I SEEM TO REMEMBER WHEN READING MY MANUAL, THAT IF YOU DO NOT TURN YOUR GAS CAP ENOUGH "CLICKS" (3 I THINK) THAT WILL CAUSE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TO COME ON AS WELL.....DOUBLE CHECK YOUR MANUAL...ALSO THINK ITS ON THE GAS CAP AS WELL...

A number of 02 owners(hand raised) have had problems with the gas cap comming loose causing the light to come on.
