Isn't it a fuel cut and not a spark cut? I was under the impression that sending all that unburned fuel down the exhaust was bad for the cat (and the air)

No, it takes at least 4 flashes before the motor flies through the hood.

Actually though, you can bounce off the rev limiter (3-5 bounces at onces, not for 10 minutes) without too much worry. Just minimize the time at or above the redline. I hit the limiter a few times a month without issue.

Also I believe that the limiter in the S2000 is a fuel cut-off limiter, not an Ignition cut.

Finally it is possible to rev the motor beyond the limiter, and this is a very bad thing to do. the 3-2(instead of 4th) misshift can cause this...
Yes the 2-3 instead of 4th is very bad! its what blew up my engine, its been two months not and i still dont have money for a new engine :'( probally never will.

I hit the limiter quite often. I like the sound.

i hardly ever see the red zone blink since I have the AP1 ecu, lol. If it starts blinking I am definitely asleep behind the shifter.

Pinging your rev-limiter won't hurt the car - it's there to save it. I've banged it plenty of times at autox when there isn't time to shift up, so you just ride the limiter into the finish line...

I've never experienced the flashing light before :[ I shift as soon as I hit redline.
Well, if that's the case, you're not hitting the redline.
I'm quite confident that hitting the limiter(blinking red light) won't do harm to the engine.
Especially the AP2s.
I see blinking lights often when I really rip it.

the blinking light lets you know when its time to shift. If you shift before you see it blinking then you're cheating yourself slightly, especially in a drag race.

**edit**

on a side note I just noticed while I went out dinner that my tach does indeed start flashing the moment I hit 8000rpm, but I just get to keep going thanks to the ap1 ecu, so I guess its a function of the actual instrument cluster. I guess I never really noticed since I shift based on the modifry shift beeper

Is it really that easy to misshift and blow out your engine?

It won't blink unless you cross into 7800+ RPM.
