Is it possible to have
A) some sort of plastic cover in the hole to prevent the GPS screen getting dirty.
B) some sort of foldback or slide cover to hide the unit whilst the car is parked? Does anybody want this feature?

Well, it depends on what nav unit Rick decides to use for his final design, but the majority of newer navs have touch screens so I don't know if this is possible.

This is a great idea!

There are many goods ideas on this thread. I'll be starting development work this weekend, so the ideas are very helpful.

OK, here's the plan. I think we can make a module that attaches to the windshield roof rail using the stock mounting points for the visor (the right-hand side hole and left-hand side screw-in attachment point). This way, the only modification required for the roof rail would be a hole drilled for the wiring, so everyone's stock roofrail would be usable.

Once the basic module is created, several variations can be developed for different Garmin devices. The module will be easily removable (with the Garmin device attached to the back) for security or weather reasons.

I'm beginning work now on a carbon fiber prototype for the module, and I'll post some pictures as soon as I have some worth looking at, which will take 2-3 weeks. Since it will be the most difficult to mold, I'm going to make the first prototype for the Garmin 2600 -2700 series. If I can do that, the Nuvi will be a piece of cake.

If there's a hole to be drilled, come up with a bit size to use and also include a "plug" for reversing the install. If you do, you got a winner...

That piece of trim is cheap. Like $30 I think, I bought one a long time ago, intending to do exactly what rick is doing.

Now that I've start making a foam mold for the carbon fiber prototype, I don't think drilling a hole will be necessary. If I can use a hollow carbon rod for the right side stock hole in the roof rail, the wiring can run through there. That'll be the goal.

I'll post some photos of the molding process next week.

BTW, we will also make a similar module for mounting a V1 radar detector on the passenger side. But first we'll make the Garmin modules.
