tidal, I think I understand where your problem rests (at least this is what it sound slike)...you're trying to get your hands under the console to pop those tabs, but you need to take the entire console piece off of the car before getting to those tabs. Start with the back of the piece, where your elbow rests, and pull straight up. Work your way forward pulling the piece up inch by inch. You'll hear lots of crunching, but that's just the metal tabs pulling through their holes.

Okay, I got the console unsnapped, now how to the top and hazard plugs come off? I've pulled on them and looked for snaps to unsnap them, but they won't budge. Do I need to unscrew them?

Nevermind, I got them off. Now I'm all the way up to step 4
Okay, I'm done. Took an hour once I knew how to get the console off! Good tip on melting the plastic screws. I didn't even break anything during the install!
