Convince them that you need both.

++Both
Roll bar not cage for looks.

If you are short enough, get an extra lap belt and show them a diagram of the built in roll hoops.

The OP is the first person I've ever heard complain about getting a hardtop

I think the most important issue is the OP's age and the fact that this might be his first car. You should be happy your parents are willing to buy you this type of car in high school. They may have overlooked how dangerous this car can be if driven by an irresponsable teen or someone with little driving experience.

I am not saying your irresponsible, but most teens are not reponsible enough to be trusted with a car like this. The peer pressure of friends, and trying to look cool in front of them, can easily get you in trouble with this car. Before you know it you have a pile of tickets and your insurance is through the roof. You try to steping on the gas hard one two many times and loose the rear and total the car.

We don't want to hear another I totaled my S story. Make sure you check your tires often and that they have plenty of tread especially the rear ones.

Just be safe and respect the car and you'll be okay.
Good luck

I guess I am kind of in the same boat, but at the stage of getting out of it. Been out of high school for a few years, but still got some friends that are like, "aoo dude, lets see how fast this thing is!"; "zomg that Z wants to race!" Gotta just ignore them. Drive smooth, look pretty, wink at the ladies, and smile that you got a hardtop half off hahaha

I doubt a roll cage would fare any better.

Lesson to be learned: just dont be stupid

try and find a used one if you can cuz mugen FRP tops don't come with paint I would suggest reading on opinions with people that have the different kinds because each one have different characterstics: visibility, noise, fitment, creaking, etc.
