The sequence is supposed to be:
1) push the button and pull the latch open
2) after the hook has popped out, close the latch again
3) lower the top
If you don't do #2, you can catch the latches on the top and even put holes in the top.

I got 2 new latches for my S yesterday from UPS. I ordered them from Manchester Honda online. Saved me over $50 that I would have paid at the local dealer.
The mail order at Manchester Honda is cheaper than the parts counter.
