The RX-8 will be slow...
If the RX-8 will be a two seater, then why make an RX-7? It's like Chevy making the Prism and the caviler, or Lexus making the GX470 and the RX300. (If I were Lexus, I would get rid of the RX300, keep the GX470 and make the LX470 the size of a Surburban).
there have been countless places. You can search Motor trend archives of the last few months, look in the "Future forecast" section. Rotarynews.com has had some articles. I have found more than 10-12 sources from links in threads on rx7club.com. Most of these including the car magazines are quoting sources at Mazda. According to MT (I think it was MT) mazda has the blue print for the rx7 and all these sources are saying that Mazda will have a 1.4 or 1.5 liter engine for the new rx7.
The only thing Mazda will put on record is that the RX-8 is not a replacement for the rx-7. They have been very vocal about that.
Goto RX7club.com and do some searches or post a question, there have been many news articles.

I guess I should say that the new RX-7 will share the same platform as the RX-8, it will be shorter, lighter and have a larger capactity rotary. Here is one link in a quick search I did. So while they will base the new rx7 on the chassis that the rx-8 is on, it will be called rx-7 and it will be a true sportscar and look very different.

As FCGuy noted I don't see how the ability to carry four people is a disadvantage. I mean I personally don't need a car with a backseat right now, but if I did need to occasionally carry more than just one other passenger the RX-8 certainly be in the top 3 of my shopping list.
Also, when you say slow just what are you comparing it to? I'd love to see the list you have of all the other new 4 passenger RWD cars with 50/50 weight balance, a LSD, a manual transmission, and a 0-60 of around 6 seconds or less- that you can buy for less than $30k. I think that is going to be a pretty short list.

I just read the http://www.autoweek.com/search/sear...50556&record=10 article. I have a question. Why not put a rotary engine in the miata? Just get rid of the power top and bose system and leather and you are saving way over $2000. Can you imagine a miata with a 250 hp rotary engine? OMG!

5-speed: 2443 lb
6-speed: 2454 lb

Weight has been creeping up. Now they all have 16" wheels, most of the luxury "options" etc.
