Most will say "The newer the better"
Most will say: "Read the FAQ."

If you want to be able to rev to 9K, go with an AP1. If you want to make sure that you are safe driving the car during the rain, go with the AP2. Most people seem to forget that you can turn the VSA off on an AP2 whenever you desire.
Either way, you can't go wrong with an S2K. All model years are decently quick for such low powered cars, pull out amazing amounts of horsepower from a 2.0/2.2-liter Inline-4 engine, weigh less than 2900 lbs, handle incredibly, are cheap to maintain (think Honda here), and there are some owners here who have taken their S2Ks past 200K miles.

from my experience with all other stability devices in all other cars (I don't know about VSA in a AP2, I'm AP1..) just because you turn it 'off' doesn't necessarily mean it actually is off and the system isn't secretly monitoring your driving...

vsa isn't necessary unless you drive like an asshat in the rain. keep some tread on your tires and you'll be fine.
