S2000 discussion on Car and Driver board.
I actually took the time to read through all the pages, some good information was there. Sadly, one member (Wizard) went through a detailed example between 2 cars, one with lower torque. He outlined how gearing is very important and showed how the car with less torque actually had more torque available at the wheels. A couple of posts later, someone else posts...ya, but the S2000 has less torque...

KeithD,
I hate to break it to you, but a 10-11 sec car, albeit fast for the street, could be completely streetable. Grand Nationals, Buick T-Types, GMC Typhoons and Cyclones, 'Vettes... you name it, put a little work in them, and you have a daily-driver 10-11 second car.
Now a 10 sec Honda, or anything lacking in displacement... that would be kind of rough. Hell, there was this twin turbo Mustang running 10" tires that ran high 8s-low 9s on the track, and it was driven to the track- in traffic. There are probably more of those cars running around than you can imagine.
Notice the underlying theme? Boost. And displacement. After all, there is no replacement for displacment.
Just the other day, I pulled up alongside a T-Type with the Stage 2 kit (read: GNX turbo). The guy thought I was probably some ass who thought he had a fast car, and he just sat back. But I rolled my window down, asked him/talked with him about his car when we were waiting, and we both drove off. Sure, he could have smoked me as we left, but I'm sure that he got more satisfaction with "some BMW owner" appreciating/complementing his car. You gotta be in the know, you know?
But no matter how fast those cars are, I'd never own one in a million years.

Here is a good overview of Torque vs. Power that I have kept around because it is the only thing I have ever found that explains things correctly (and technically). No BS guessing here...

Yikes, before we start hating uninformed s2k posts, let's clear up that 1/4 time on that z28
If you check out ls1.com you'll find some cool guys that are extremely cool, although most are biased towards nothing but GM.
Many of the f-bodies are easily capable of hitting high 12's with little to no mods at all (there are a slew of free mods that are done to increase airflow in order to bring the car up to speed with the vette which has the same engine but is lighter with better airflow).
Most of the guys there are running low to mid 13's, if you can't hit 13.9, you are pretty much considered as good of a driver as the person who stalls their s2k at every light
Best bang for the buck as far as 1/4 times go, they also handle great on road tracks despite feeling like a boat. The interior blows, reliability is spotty at best, dealers are clueless and shouldn't be touching the cars, and it's resale tanks immediately - but they're the fastest car you can get for under 30k stock.
You can even get a "stripper" ls1 in z28 form for around 21k, possibly under 20k with their current incentives. The SS is the same as the Z28 except it has some SLP mods you can buy for much less than the difference would be at the dealer. Aside from that, they're basically a vette but understated so as to not take too much "class" away from the C5. I hope the C6 upgrades a bit, at this point the C5 to me is a classy camaro, I think GM wants to seperate themselves from that stigma as much as possible...
I don't own an f-body (actually I have an accord - http://www.mistergin.net/car ), but like the ls1 guys and have learned a lot over the course of time...
Good discussion though, I too remember telling my dad "yeah but you have to drive them at like 7k rpm all over town to get anywhere" 2 years ago at the AZ autoshow
A lot can change, can't wait til I get my house in about a year, the s2k comes right after that

What a bunch of HATERS! I had to register just so I could reply and put in my 2 cents. These people that criticize our cars, seriously needs to drive one. Unless all they want is a 10-11 second street car.
These guys are probably the ones that are completely devoted to NASCAR.My favorite:
(quoted by: Shaman) -"I'd kill one!"
No shit with a 560 hp Firebird!
I mean, I love cars but I don't go totally ragging on other sportscar just because my car can do "this" better then "that" car. Every sportscar shines in it's own way whether it be in acceleration, handling, braking, or just a balanced performer.

I supposed you could have an 11sec Vette streetable, possibly pass emissions. Anything faster no way. I actually have a neighbor with a low 11's vette (w/ street tires), which he says isn't very streetable due to the engine work. It has no cats on it.
To each his own.
