S2000 discussion on Car and Driver board.
KeithD, I'll give you names and numbers of three or four 10/11 second, very streetable, street legal cars. I know of two "street legal" though not all that streetable 9 second cars. Actually, one of those 9 second cars is AWFULLY close to being an 8 second street car (9.04@155). I could list probably 20 or 30 people I know via the internet that drive to the track and come home with deep 11 second time slips. It's not all that hard and not all that uncomfortable to drive them in traffic either.
The comment about stalling an S2000 for lack of torque is just stupid. I've driven my old roommates S2000 many times and though I feel the lack of low end grunt compared to my Z28, it's no where near what most people think. On top of that, the way it pulls up top is incredible and makes up for any low end deficiencies in my mind. As already posted, stalling a S2000 is just due to poor driving. I stall my car sometimes and I've got over 300 lbs/ft at 1900 rpm... obviously not due to lack of torque. Probably has more to do with the clutch than anything, but that's not the point. I don't go pointing fingers at my car when I'm not paying attention.
The thing that really cracks me up is the double standard in a lot of these posts. You talk about how these "haters" put down anything Honda because their addicted to GM products, but then put down GM products in the same breath because it's not a Honda. Just shows a lack of knowledge and/or perspective in my opinion. I know this is a Honda board, so I don't expect to get a lot of love for my GM here. I just get chuckle when someone notes how single minded some people are then, punks out and playa' hates
GM for not being Honda.
KeithD, be assured that those guys in 10 and 11 second street cars are not jealous of your Honda... many of them have spent more than you have on your car. Also, f-bodies are Camaros and Trans Ams only. Corvette's are Y-bodies. The Camaro will return in 2005 most likely on a Catera/CTS chassis, so it will not be on a f-body platform so therefore will probably not be called a f-body at that point... but it will still be a Camaro. I don't know if the Trans Am badge will ever come back.
I'm ok with you not liking my car, after all I didn't buy it for you.
It's safe to say I'm not insecure with it. Though you might laugh at me in my pile of plastic that's worth nothing, I'd probably give you a thumbs up if I saw you in your car on the road. Hopefully I'd get a nod back. I had the chance to twist the doors off of a black S2000 the other day, but instead we gave each other a wave then pulled away from the red light like grandmothers trying not to show any disrespect. Sort of weird how us gearheads act around one another sometimes... maybe Discovery will do a documentary on it one day. I can just see it now: "The domestic driver pulls up slowly towards a crowd of imports with his stereo and rpm down as to show that he's friendly and just wants to chat..."

-yes I love NASCAR and NHRA, but wait, I also love F1 and CART. WTF????
-WRC is fun too, just not my cup of tea, watching time trials is fun for about a half hour. Highlight films are out of control though.

Interestingly enough, my daily driver before my S2000 was an '89 Corvette. I'll have to say that the torque argument is very valid, but I just figure it's the character of the new car. The fact is that the Vette will take off pretty well at any speed and the S has to pause and rev up before it goes anywhere. Honestly, it's a complete dog at low speeds in comparison to the Vette. I rarely even get to my VTEC range in daily use. I'm always in the powerband in my Vette.
I'm happy with my S2k, but I'll definitely miss some aspects of the Vette. I don't want to denigrate my new car, but the Vette should be respected.
Robin.

Mystic_350 - I'm not going to put your whole arguement in quotes ... but well-spoken! I know that I, for one, have been guilty of the same kind of bashing I accuse others of doing (without even realizing it). But I also know there's nothing nicer than seeing the convertible vettes in my area (not too many s2ks near me ... lots of 'vettes!), waving and acknowleging that we're both happy with the sunshine and nice breeze hitting us!
