S2000: The End or a means to an end?
Maybe I'm just reaching that age (38) when I don't have the desire for pin-me-back-into-my-seat power anymore. Maybe it's because I used to ride sport bikes so I got my fill of brain-flattening acceleration. Either way, I'm more than happy with 240 HP and 153 lb/ft. The car has just enough power to hang the tail out when I want to, then scoot it back in before I get into trouble.
And nastinupe1, I'm with the woman of my dreams now, so maybe it's all some kind of karmic alignment of the planets
Now if I can just get a job......

Did you ever do the seat lowering Mod. as seen in
I was very happy with it as I am 6"4' .
The first thing I said to the Salesman when I sat in the car was , " what do you mean there is no Tilt Wheel"
Seat Lowering thread with Pics
I had a deposit on a used Boxster S in perfect condition with all of the right options...had always like the s2000 but never really drove it hard to see what it could do.
Lined up a back to back test drive and the rest is history.
Would love a M3 Convertible with SMG in addition to the S2k though!

I really enjoy these "philosophical" posts. I've had next to no experience with true sports cars so I'm no expert -- but I can say this:
Back in 1999, I got my hands on an S2000 brochure. It folded out into a poster of a silverstone/red that just fired me up and got me dreaming of seat time.
Three years later I test drove an S, laid out a down payment, and haven't stopped smiling since. Now I imagine taking her out on a sunny day 30 or 40 years hence and watching other drivers' necks whip around.

At first, my wife didn't like the S. She actually wanted me to search out a used Z3 in good condition or get the 350Z. But, ever since the car came out, it's been on my mind. You all know how that is. Couldn't be happier. I don't think I'll ever get tired of this car.
For me my S2000 is probably the nicest car I'll ever own, short of winning the lottery. Having driven sports cars since I was 16 my first being a 1960 Austin Healey I've owned nothing but sports cars in the interim. Will this be my last sports car? I doubt it, but I can't imagine a better one. But a stepping stone? No way, while not the pinnacle for some of you better healed$$$ owners out there for me I think I've reached the zenith of sports car ownership.
No other cars on the market currently get me as excited as the S2000 does. It has aged wonderfully & to me is def. one of the sexiest cars on the road. The looks are just pure sex appeal. Def. a big factor for me as looks usually get me more excited than whats under the hood, but in this case thats not a factor as this car has it all.
I don't plan on buying new again until '06-'07. When I do I plan on keeping the S2000 & converting it to a weekend track car.

I am in my 50s. I had a number of European sportscars/roadsters when I was in my twenties and thirties. Family obligations meant 4 doors and 4 seats. I was saving for college educations and paying a mortgage, so a third/weekend car was out of the question, but I'd always promised myself another sportscar. I thought it would be a vintage MGA or perhaps a TD.
When the S came out, it stole my heart and captured my imagination. I bought it last year and remarkably, I no longer lust for the 1952 MG. My S2000 is the first car that I have ever owned that I find totally satisfactory. I hope to own it forever, or atleast for as long as I am able to enjoy it.
Some of this is because it is a truly great car, and some of it because I am firmly in middle age. As djohnson has said, we don't need to be pinned to the seat. And, I am already married to the "chick" of my dreams.
It is the most thrilling car I have ever owned, for me it is not a stepping stone.
