S2000 Engine/Warranty Issue
... a lighter flywheel combined with a lower gearing in the rear end, and a higher ratio for the 6th gear to compensate for the lower rear end ...
Every engine can be destroyed by mis-shifts. This one is more sensitive because it has a short throw shifter. If it bothers someone, they should either get a different car, or create a gear shift nob that is extra tall to increase the throw (anti-counter sunk).
Personally, I think that people who over-rev the engine by mis-shifting should pay for the damage. It is without a doubt, driver error. Warrantees are paid for by the buyer. They are NOT free. If warrantees were to cover things like this, then the price tag on all cars would have to be increased. I don't think it would be fair for the skilled, careful drivers to have to subsidize the people who make these types of errors.

Destiny, I agree that a lockout has merit. We don't really know why Honda doesn't have such a device in the transmission. On the other hand, no other manufacturer has pioneered such a device, so let's not fault Honda for not inventing something here. That's not fair. Would you guys rather they hadn't sold the car because they couldn't build an idiot-proof transmission?? (pardon the "idiot" thing, I don't mean to imply that making mistakes means you're an idiot -- not at all)
I have some real issues with fast-miami and Eleki holding Honda responsible here, and especially fast-miami taking legal action against Honda, but hey it's his choice. I don't see this as Honda's responsibility.

Fast-miami, the RSX-S and the S2000 do not both have the F20C engine. The RSX-S engine is a 200 hp 142 foot lb transverse engine (I think) that IS i-VTEC. It revs to 7,900 rpm and has an 11:1 compression ratio. The S2000's F20C is a 240 hp 152 ft lb longituditnal engine that is VTEC not i-VTEC. It revs to 8,900 rpm and has an 11:1 compression ratio. They're both great engines, I think, but not the same.
I think it is very possible that the engines giving fast-miami, su701 and elike-SD-Calif. problems all have oil starvation problems rather than over-revving problems. There is a huge difference between missing a shift and missing a shift at high rpm and allowing the engine to be forced to 11,000 or 12,000 rpm.
fast-miami's car is only 3 months old. I don't know if it is an '02 or '03, but I'd love to know. I'd also love to know, if it is an '02, if the engine number is before or after 1025386. It might be the first with the new oil jet bolts to show major engine problems. In any case, he knows it wasn't over-revved, so it broke without owner abuse. Unless he let the engine run out of oil or unless he over-revved it to 12,000, AHM should fix it. It seems simple to me.
elike-SD-Calif. bought her car new and has owned it and driven it for 20,000 miles.. It just recently developed the dreaded ticking sound. The engine light came on. One dealer blamed it on over-revving. A leakdown test showed poor performance of the #4 cylinder. Now AHM says it has eight bent valves. It wasn't low on oil and she didn't over-rev it. I don't understand why there is any doubt that her car should also be fixed under warranty.
su701 has told me in private mail some of the details of his car's failure. It also sounds typical of the engine dying after an oil starvation problem and not related to over-revving. As far as I know, it wasn't low on oil and besides, it only had 4000 miles on it. I don't understand why this isn't also a warranty issue.
