I want to the Pontiac dealer yesterday and they mentioned the comparison they did between the solstice, s2000, Miata, and Mini Cooper, and told me how the Solstice outran everyone except for the s2000. But, they also that next year the Solstice will also have an optional supercharger to boost its power output to 240 horses.

This is all really BS since Pontiac will never make anything remotely in the ballpark to Honda in regards to quality or engineering. Their cars are junk and have always been junk. The interior of the Solstice looks gaudy and like it was designed for flash appeal. Cheap plastic and a cheap plastic insert for the console, gages, etc.

This is another pathetic attempt to compete with Honda as in the 1980s when the MR2, CRX Si, and Fiero were compared since they were 2 seaters. The Fiero sucked big time and was politely (sometimes not so politely) called junk then. I don't see any difference now.

There is one simple rule to abide by when talking to a dealer:

Whenever they refer to a car as a "bad boy" or as a "puppy" you need to just get out of the situation and stop talking to them because they are feeding you

When my last car was stolen, I went to a dealership and this guy came up and was trying to really swindle me into a deal. He was the typical guy who'd refer to a car as "check this bad boy out" and whatnot. I told him I wanted a car that was only manual, only 2 door, and nothing less than 160-170 horsepower (this was a Toyota/scion dealership, in the used car section). They didn't really have much available, except a silverstone 03 S2000.

I told him I wanted to test drive it and he was like "well, that car is really tough to earn a test drive in, why don't you check out this jetta over here" (it was auto, which I already told him I would never buy an automatic tranny ever in my life) and I finally settled for test driving a new Scion tC. I told him it didn't have enough power, and that I really wanted to drive the S2000. He said I'd have to do a credit check, and that came up fine and after driving he told me an absurd amount of 28k - this was only 7 months ago and granted it only had 5000 miles, but I told him that that was just ridiculous and he didn't want to budge. He tried to get me to buy the tC "these puppies can be modified like crazy, we even have air intakes and exhaust you can finance with the car" I just got tired of him and said I wasn't interested, and that I'd just go buy an S2000 from autotrader.

Boy am I glad I did.
That is really strange how he tried to get you to buy brand new over a used car.

To my knowledge, the used side makes massive amounts more in gross profit than a sale of a brand new vehicle simply because the cost of acquiring said product to sell is usually less on a used car, more on a brand new one....and this information I got from somone who sells at a Toyota/Scion dealership.

I would think the S2000 would be harder to sell, just because 90 some percent of car buyers are not going to be interested in it....so if I had someone express interest, I would try like hell to get that person to buy it.

I think you are all underestimating the salesmen. Remember we are a community of enthusiasts. We know more about the cars that we are interested in than the salesmen ever could or would. To us, its a passion, to them its just a product and a paycheck. Like it or don't, the salesmen get paid to sell cars, no to be enthusiasts. They will do anything they can to get that paycheck including lying to the customer and quoting bad information. Like most of you, I don't think that this is right, but I do know that this is the way it is.

As Chazmo said before, "Know your car". To that I'll add, "Expect nothing from the salesman, and be on your guard."
