My wife lost one of the remote keys for her Lexus. It is the same as our key and remote set up all in one. Transponder in the key for the ignition and remote functions as part of the fob. The Lexus dealer charged us $250 for the key and $58 to program it. I did get a "free" wash job however.

Yikes...

We've been looking into getting a late model Land Cruiser or Lexus LX470, and I know they have the same keys you're referring to.

Although, I suppose the cost won't seem nearly as bad once we have had to buy gas a few times for it...

Speaking of remotes -- when I had the original non-alarm remote, it worked great. Then I added the OEM alarm system and Honda gave me a new extra remote -- it really sucks. I often have to push the button multiple times to get the doors to lock/unlock, even if I'm standing right next to the car. Yet if I use the non-alarm remote, it still works fine. I took the driver's seat out and checked the installation and didn't find anything wrong (had the installation directions). I also changed the battery in the remote, but no difference.

Anybody know what's up with the OEM alarm remote? Is it its location under the front seat that creates the problem?

Are you talking about the cheap design remote with the "OPTION" button? I think those are designed to wear out fast so you have to keep going to the dealer for replacements. They seem a lot less durable than the factory system remotes.

Yes, the remote that says "option". But it is also an OEM remote and the design is almost identical except for the trunk icon that is replaced by the word option. Both have the Honda logo & both were made in Japan.

I don't think it is the actual remote that is the problem, I think the problem is in the placement of the receiver in the car, but I'm not sure & that's why I asked if anyone has similar problems.

I have one that I got on ebay when I thought I was getting a deal on a cheap S2000 remote. They do look similar, but are quite different. I think they are made by an aftermarket company for Honda.

Does it help any if you HOLD the remote button for like 2 seconds instead of a quick press? I remember when I was buying my S2000 there was a customer at the dealership arguing with the service manager that the keyless didn't work on their Odyssey. She would press the button and the doors wouldn't open. The service guy held the remote button, and the doors opened fine.

Yes, sometimes -- and that is what is driving me crazy! I'm patient enough that if there was something I needed to do to get it to work consisitently, I'd just do it and live with it, but I can't find a solution. Sometimes holding the button works. But sometimes I can be standing right next to the driver's door and press that damn button multiple times and nothing happens. At other times I can be 25 feet away with a partially obstructed view and it works!

Strange.

The bad thing with that is...its one of those things where you keep having a problem, but you bring it to the dealership and they can't seem to reproduce it. Thats gotta be annoying.

So you need to carry and use both remotes, or does the dealer type function the original lock - unlock - panic - trunk features?

Can you use just the original type remote?

The original remote works fine, but it will not set the alarm. No, I do not carry both, just the one that will set the alarm & gives me trouble.

All the remotes are car type specific. It has to do with the radio or part of the factory radio - I think. It's really easy to program. A salesman at the same dealership could have done it for free. (I would have anyway) I posted the instructions somehwere else on this forum before.
