OR ............ At the time they decided to put an auto tranny into the NSX, the only one they had in the parts bin that would fit that application could not handle the power and torque mated to the engine as it was. So, to increase reliability, they de-tuned the engine so customers wouldn't be coming back with tranny problems.
I dunno for sure either, that's just my thought.

I am starting to think Honda can't build trannies for some reason. Their autos are bad, tiptronics aren't reliable, their manuals seems to always grind not just in the S.

I have to refrain from buying a Honda for my next one since I rather have my engine blow up then an intermitten gear grind.

My S2000 has got more soul than the entire library of James Brown tunes. My S2000 has got more soul than a pot of gumbo soup. My S2000 has got more soul than Nike makes shoes. My S2000 has got more soul in it's right lugnut than 99% of the entire automobiles on the road. Always have, always will.
There. Someone had to say it.

Anybody think that installing a sequential shifter adds soul? Even this ol' motorcycle rider likes the standard shift when on four wheels. (Maybe I'm showing my advanced age.) If I had an S2X00 with one of these, I'd have to lock up the car keys to keep my kids out of it.

However, it's a clever--and sneaky--way to broaden the market for the car while avoiding the weight and image problems of a slush bucket. We'll never know how much of this decision was because of expected decreases in warranty claims, how much to generate new sales and justify an MSRP increase, and whether this shifter is consistent with the original vision of the car.
