S2000 or RX7
Remember where you are and who you are talking about this to. In general, these s2k owners are looking for the most reliable and fun sportscar they can get. Arguably, a lot of people on here think if a car isn't as reliable as a civic, it is 'unreliable'. Some people would say buying a 30+k$ 2ltr 240hp honda is retarded. Some would say buying a very tempermental FD is retarded. There are just as many FD owners who sold s2k's as there are s2k owners who sold their FD's, but guess which ones you are talking to?
FIRST of all, you aren't paying cash for this. What does tell me? You .don't have a lot of cash to pay for repairs. This eliminates the FD and most older turbo cars unless you get them for cheaper.
You can find a reliable and excellent performing mr2 turbo or 300zx turbo for 9-12k. I've owned both, and both are reliable, obviously the more complex 300zx needs more maint., but I don't think that makes a car more unreliable, just not dumbass proof, as I call it. Both also hold their value very well, and 300zx TT's are relatively easy to find if you are looking accross state borders.
RX-7's don't depreciate [relatievely speaking], and contrary to what many people assume, a blown motor in a FD is not a big deal compared to a blown motor in a s2k or other highend honda. Rotaries are cheap to rebuild, couple grand and you are back on the road as good as new.
Lets look at this again, from my very experienced used car POV.
Who now, mostly owns FD's? Younger people, or slighly older people wanting an awesome handling, rare car, with a lot of power potential. Very, very few of FD's haven't had TONS of owners [5+]. When the s2k is 10 years old, we'll see what the deal is.
The FD is a legend, and my favorite chassis of all time. However, this is the only old supercar besides the VR4 [pos] and FD [too scared at the time I wanted one due to horror stories] I haven't owned. Probably not coincedence.
If 50% or 70% of s2k's were heavily modified with turbos or superchargers, do you think their reliability reputation would suffer? FD's are.
If you are happy with bolt-ons and don't mind doing the reliability mods [precat, cooling system, etc.], it can be fairly reliable [60-100k on engine].
Don't get too critical of the car just because people don't understand how the engine works.
The transmission, rear end, suspension, etc. is all overengineered and superior in many forms to the s2000. Depends on what you find more valuable in a car.
No s2k will probably ever get the looks of a clean FD.

Daily Driver and FD (RX-7) do not belong in the same sentence. Consult the rx7forums.com for a second opinion.
