So, if you don't switch to synthetic before 5,000 miles, what oil do you use after the first 3,750 miles? American Petrolium Institute "SJ" quality 10W-30 mineral oil?

Not knowing any better (saleseman told me no break-in nessasary), on my first weekend with the car I redlined it quite of few times. Since reviewing the owner's manual and the posts on this forum I've been keeping it under 5K. What sort of damage can be done by this? Having had the car over 6weeks and only 350 miles, I don't know if I can wait until 800miles!!

THEORETICALLY you may have shortened the longevity of your engine, say from 225,000 miles to 210,000 miles or something on that magnitude.

Plenty of F20Cs have had less gradual break-ins than yours and not had any problem. Of the 14 engines with failures requiring short block replacements, there's no pattern as to break in. Plenty of them had by-the-book break-in.

Having said that, I'd follow the book from now on. More important than break-in, check your oil often, as mentioned above.

I don't know how you can say that. No one (but Honda) really knows what sort of effect an abusive break-in will have on the new carbon fiber/metalic/ceramic cylinder walls. Traditionally high RPM running a new engine will create severe heat on parts that have not mated yet. This can cause such things as scoring on the cylinder walls and overheated rings which will make them brittle and God (and Honda) knows what else.

Honda put the owners manual in the glove box for a reason.
