No mechanical error, found.. So that leaves us with...the driver.
And many of us have done it. One of the benefits of driving on the track is the opportunity to screw up without necessarily bad consequences.

I've had two bad spins on the track. The first was in heavy rain, when I accelerated too rapidly coming out of a turn, did a very quick 180, and buried my car up to the axles in loose dirt; they had to haul me out, but there was no damage done (Mike was there that day in Spokane). It is truly amazing how fast the back end will come around when you hit the throttle wrong in the rain.

The other was when I wasn't careful enough on a fairly high speed (~80mph) turn at Pacific Raceways, at the crest of a hill, and did an artful 180 (Mike was right behind me, and got to see me doing some very nice driving backwards, without power brakes--which seem to disappear sometimes when going backwards at high speed--to avoid a tire wall).

I get the urge to drive really aggressively out of my system with my occasional track days, which also do a good job of teaching me to drive smoothly--no quick throttle inputs, brake inputs, or steering inputs, especially in turns or at speed.

Exactly.

Let's say the car is doing 80mph. The wheels are all turning at an angular velocity which gives 80mph at the outside edge.

Now you hit the brakes. As long as you don't exceed the maximum amount of braking that the wheels can supply without slipping, both the wheels and the car will slow down at the same rate. So far so good.

Now you hit the brakes a little harder. At this point the wheel starts moving slightly slower than the car. The difference is called the "slip angle". The maximum friction from the wheel is not when the slip angle is zero, it is when the slip angle is up at some small amount. So now you are acheiving your maximum amount of brake force, and the wheel is moving just a little bit slower than the car is. But the wheel is not completely locked up, either.

OK, so you press even harder on the brakes. Now the wheel starts to move even slower. The slip angle gets bigger, and the tire starts to lose friction. So the ABS, which is measuring the slip angle, relaxes the brakes just a bit. Then the wheel speeds up, and the slip angle decreases.

The key to this is that the ABS can measure this so quickly that it can catch the wheel while it is still slowing down but hasn't yet completely stopped. So you never actually lock up the wheel.
Well, I believe you, and, I'm wrong
