Yep, that about sums it up.

Boxter S runs SCCA SuperStock, the Boxter and the S2000 runs A-Stock in Solo II (next year, anyway). That says something about what racers think of the difference.

By the way, a friend of mine autocrosses a Boxter. He's a lot faster driver than I am, but his Boxter breaks down and so I have the season trophy and he doesn't. Porche fixes his car under the warranty even though he races it. I've heard Honda won't warranty an S2000 if you autocross it.

Wow...I always enjoy SteveC's "insightful" responses (always nice to know - by their own admission - who the honor graduates are from the "University of Assholery"!)

My live-in g/f owns a MY01 Boxster S. We also own a MR2 (no connection - it's just the beater). And (prior to us living together) she mentioned that she had "already out-run one of those Hondas". Well, over the past year, I've had LOTS and LOTS of opportunities to drive her Boxster S and, as someone mentioned earlier, it IS easier to make go fast and the car does handle very nicely. However, the car will NOT accelerate faster than my S2000. Period. I've run the g/f a couple of times (yeah...I know...she's a girl - no offense to all the woman Mario Andrettis out there) and the results are the same....the cars accelerate about equally.

I'm sure the new BoxsterS will be more than our (stock) cars can handle...but, as someone earlier also said, IMHO it's just not worth THAT much extra money...especially when maintenance is taken into account.

just my .02...

Well Steve I must be a little different then. I have driven both cars and could afford either. When it came right down to it I liked the S2000 more.
Fantastic. Having the money to purchase a more expensive car does not mean you must. My earlier point was not meant to insinuate anyones financial status, just an observation as to how the whole Boxster vs S2000 debate always plays out.

I personally like the s2000 more than the Boxster S, and yes, I am happy that the S2000 is as cheap as it is and as capable as it is. However, I am also willing to admit that the Boxster S is the more capable car, so if we are to base our arguments on pure numbers alone, the Porsche is the "faster" car.

My belief is that those with a bit of money tend to be a bit more objective when discussing matters like this as we are not looking for the "my car is as good as yours and cheaper" self worth reinforcement.

When Honda built the S2000 Honda made the s2000 to compare against the Porsche Boxster. So I think in number race a good driver in an s2000 against a fair driver in a Porsche the S2000 would be better. But in a good driver in both cars the Porsche will come out on top. Makes you wonder though if Honda put an Acura badge on the s2000 would it be close to the same price as Porsche.

E36, I don't agree with that, or at least I have never seen anything from Honda that indicates this. Why do you think Honda built the S to compare with the Porsche??

According to the written material from Honda and from the S2000 book by Daniel Carney, the S2000 was conceived early in the '90s as a small roadster with trickle-down F1 cockpit "feel".

The fact, though, is that the S blew away the base Boxster at the time it was introduced, and it seems to me that Porsche, not Honda, was playing a catch up game.

That said, perhaps the Box S and the S2000 are the closest competition to each other that's currently out there. And I agree with everyone that if you're going to pay the extra $$ for the Porsche "experience," it oughta' be worth something.

Steve C,

Why do you prefer the S2000 to the Boxster S?

(just curious)

The s2000 was started in the mid 90's and started testing around 98 when they where doing their evaluation they had a Porsche boxster, slk and I think a miata. You can say the s2000 was made on it own but Honda marketing know what this car is suppose to compete against.
