as much as i love the S now and say i'll keep it forever, i can't predict the future. in 10 years i might get tired of the S (no matter how much you say now you won't) and who knows, some car might come out way better than the S. i'd say just keep the CR as a garage queen and forget about buying another one unless your insurance only goes up very little and all your cars are paid off and you have some chump change to spare.

then again i wouldn't mind having 2 s2k's...(i'd get rid of the beetle and get the 2nd S)

If you have the means and feel that it's necessary, sure why not? But I feel like you'd be doing a horrible disservice to whichever car you retire later down the road (think of how neglected it will feel). In all honesty, I'd just have one s2000, drive the crap out of it, and see how many miles you can get on it before it needs a heart transplant. With a car sitting and waiting in the wings, you're going to have to replace things when it's time to drive it anyways.

For me at least, having a high mileage car that's in great condition would be much more rewarding than having two low mileage cars, or even one low mileage car and one high mileage car that I was afraid to drive because I didn't trust it. It shows that you've enjoyed the car, know how to take care of it, and that it is loved.

It's a car, use it. When something breaks, replace and/or upgrade it.

Woot, GAian.

I wouldn't buy that '01... it seems pretty overpriced at $14k.

I also wouldn't get another s2k.

If I were in your position, I would buy a NSX to complement your S. Although I love my S a lot and would never sell it, I feel two of the same cars may be a bit much.

Earlier this year I traded my '06 S in towards an '08 CR which had a scant 12k miles on the odo (my '06 had rolled past 50k). I dearly love the CR, but I miss the ragtop - that was a convertible. A recent injury which took my right hand out of commission for a while (bloody inconvenient) kept me out of my S2K for longer than I could stand - I drove it yesterday. Some of the shifts hurt a bit, but it sure felt nice to drive that car again.

This brings me to my question. I'm about to turn 50, so I should have at least 20 more years of being able to drive the perfect roadster. Will my CR last me 20 years? Should I wait to see if Honda gets its soul back and introduces a fitting replacement for the S2K? Should I buy another S2K now and put one away for my next car? I ask because I see one available locally which has obviously been pampered - it's even wearing touring tires which implies that its driver hasn't been testing the limits of adhesion. The price is right, at $14k for a 2001 with 45k miles (and it's my 2nd favorite color combo ( )).

Obviously, I'm not asking for the community to make this decision for me; I have to do that on my own. I am asking for a sanity check. Is this a crazy idea? Couldn't I pretty much put my CR away (driving it once or twice a month) and have my next car waiting in the wings? I don't envision my ever getting tired of driving an S2K - it's such an honest and pure machine (very nicely shaped sheetmetal too). Hell, maybe I'm just looking to build a case to present to my wife (who actually doesn't share my enthusiasm for the idea ).
Hey there. I'm in Atlanta and would love to check out your CR if youre ever in the area. Also, sorry to hear about your hand. Hopefully its improving quickly!

I would not buy a second S2000, but instead install the soft top in the CR and end up with the Type-S that was available in Japan. Remove the rear cross brace to make room, no biggie. Costs less, takes up less space, and will keep you from having to choose between the S you want to drive unnecessarily. Why spend $14k and have to deal with that when you can make the CR what you want for $2-3k?

Also, if I had NSX money, I'd be looking at a Cayman instead.

Agree'd on the whole NSX ordeal. But if he's getting another S to have the soft top feature than go for it. I've seen AP1's with less than 15,000 miles going for 14k btw.

For the price of the cockster I'd get a Z4 M

My S has 130k miles on it. I don't plan on selling her. She just got fresh paint and a hardtop. When things break, they'll be replaced accordingly. I have an emergency fund just in case it needs major repairs(aka engine replacement). Don't be afriad to put miles on her. She's a Honda!

Except for the Cayman over the NSX. Cayman is a great car but an NSX is a unique. Unlike a later poster I would take the Cayman over the Z4M
