Hey 4373,
Sounds like you are an interested enthusiast, but not an "expert" on - and advocate of - the SEV system. However, I was actually hoping to attract a taker who's affiliated with a manufacturer or distributor of the SEV, or at least one who considers him/herself very familiar with the operation of the SEV and who (claims to) really believe in it.

In other words: Honest, I didn't mean to just tempt my fellow board members' gambling habits - and I am not the lottery!

So I guess I'd like to see who else comes forward that would be willing to take up my challenge. To clarify further, I was predicting no such person would take me up, and wanted to demonstrate that very lack of confidence of the SEV proponents to this group. Plus it would be a lot more interesting if we got a real head-to-head contest going between the believers and the skeptics. For the record, if he's willing, I'd want UL as my Advocate.

So anyhoo, 4373, if as I suspect no one with a direct SEV connection comes forward after a reasonable time, perhaps you'd be amenable to a slightly, ah, less "interesting" scenario, in which we jointly volunteer to be guinea pigs for the overall good of the board? We could work out financial details via PM...

But if a SEV expert comes forward I am still prepared to live up to my offer.

I received an e-mail from a friend of mine's brother who professionally races his historic Porsche around the world. He said he would prefer to remain anonymous and not have his name mentioned or associated with any products other than those which are sponsors of his car and racing program. So let's call this here say-
His e-mail is long so I'll try to condense but the general issue was the poor quality of street and racing fuel available to them in Japan. His crew chief had commented to some of the other pit crews who said, it is essential to bring fuel with you because all the additives and octane boosters in the world can't get this stuff right. As a result he had diminished power both qualifying and racing and was beat by some cars which normally don't finish on the same lap as them. This was three years ago and he said he remembered seeing early development stages of some bands placed around intakes to aid in the higher combustion of this low grade fuel. Seeing as his Porsche has twin carbs with no intake tubes it was non-applicable to them so they didn't dwell on it. His point is that the development of SEV in Japan may be to remedy the problem of poor quality fuel not facing the American racing program and any combustion gain would be considerably less noticeable in a car burning American high quality fuel. To continue, I think Japan has a greater sense of urgency to remedy poor combustion and any gains SEV may make with Japanese fuel would prove to be diminished with higher burning American fuel.
It is from this e-mail that I proposed the original thread "Are we overlooking something in the US", because we would not be looking as hard as another country incurring a problem yet, maybe we could still benefit.
I had thought about this diminished power theory before accepting your wager, but had hoped that was why J's said 6 - 10 HP - 10 with poor Japanese fuel and 6 with better fuel abroad.
I enjoy this board and really don't want to divide it or generate hostility (which bets usually do). I was feeling pretty good since the Dolphins win Monday night covered my SEV investment. What I think this would come down to is your getting screwed by a poor translation and product description where you would have to say, "but that is not at all the way the product was described in any of the links posted". Quickly members analyzed the site I linked and dismissed SEV (to say it mildly) only one member "LewKeim" posted "instead of searching on SEV, search on magnets and oxygen". I respect that post in that he is looking for the facts based on the product, not based on my original links which may have been totally wrong or misleading. This bet is dangerous unless you have researched this product thoroughly enough to be sure, $5K sure, there isn't other info somewhere else that might totally change the concept of SEV.

The Japanese fuel comments are very interesting. I was always under the impression that they had very good fuel over there, particularly in the fact that they have 100 octane pump gas.

American pump gas is hardly what I would call "high quality".

Also, Japanese turbo cars such as the Subaru WRX STi have had to be detuned when exported to other countries such as Australia, due to the lack of as high an octane fuel as in Japan.

I can't comment on the racing gas issue.

Can anyone add anything?

Even if the gas was of a considerably lower quality, what one EARTH are radium impregnated magnets going to do for it? The BEST you could hope for is collect any metal in the fuel lines before it gets into the injectors, but after a few tanks your fuel line around that magnet will start to look like an erector set inside. That also wouldn't take care of any non-magnetic crap in the fuel. Yet again, SEV loses out.

I'm still amazed at RC's acceptance of this bunk...either they're using it with a prayer, they're trying to push a product with a high profit margin, or they just could care less.

Actually, we probably do have the highest "quality" gas in the world. Not necessarily the highest octane, but certainly the best filtered and with quite a few additives to help ensure complete combustion. At the very least, there would be much fewer particulates in the gas. This is all due to our very high emissions standards, of course.

LewKeim,
Try http://www.patentdatabase.com. I was having issues viewing the images (TIFF format) in my browser, but I could read the text.

Of note: the ones I looked at indicated the magnetic field must be over 500 Gauss!!! That's freakin' IMMENSE. In my electric motors class in school we typically measured fields of a few milligauss a few inches from the motor (which probably drew a kilowatt or so, ie. 1 hp). More to the point, 500 Gauss is 0.05 Tesla; the WORLD RECORD of magnetic field strength is only a few Tesla (less than 10 I believe), and has to be produced using huge power generators and gigantic electromagnets.
