Default shifting from 1-2

hello i'm a new '05 s2k owner!

i'm still breaking in the engine so i've been real careful with it so far. Btw is is my first manaul car.

somehow the car is very jerky/jumpy whenever shifting from 1-2. i figure probably because the rev drops too low or something..so i give it a little gas with the clutch in before i slowly release the clutch into gear 2..Is it bad for the clutch??

can anyone give me any tips shifting from 1-2 fast & smooth?

thankyou

oo one more thing..is it normal that there is a "clung" sound when shifting into gears?? or is that grinding?

Well, this is not the easiest car to learn on, but since this is the car you have just keep practicing. You will eventually get it right. It sounds like you're concentrating on each individual physical motion. Keep working on it until it becomes like one fluid motion. We won't stand for any "clung" noises here! Good luck!

Sounds to me like you are shifting too low in the RPM range...This car's strong point isnt its tq..And slipping the clutch to smooth things out a little bit isnt that bad on the clutch..Just try to do it less and less because eventually it will wear it down prematurly...If you shift at about 2,5k rpms from 1st to 2nd..maybe even 3k rpms I think it would shift a bit smoother as you put it...The only gear I ever slip the clutch is, is on 1st when moving from a dead stop..On any other gear its just a matter of getting your feet trained to move at the right time...

Ohh and dont worry about the "clunk"...this shifter is connected directly into the transmission itself, not by a cable or wire like most fwd's are, and seeing how the trans is right under the shift boot (and that's the only sound deading from the trans to the car btw) you will hear the gear change more so on this car than on another FWD manual car...Congradulations on the new purchase of one amazing machine...Go out there and practice...and have fun doing it

thanks for the feedback! i'm trying to baby it and shift around 3k rpm for the first 1000km as suggested in the manual.

it's definitely a awesome machine!! but it does attract a lot of attention... i find i get tailgated more often by SUVs now..sigh

That might be because you are shifting at 3,000 rpms...

key is to match revs on shifts....
for ex., if you shift at 4000 RPM in 1st gear, then I think you wanna be at around 2700 RPM in 2nd gear......in the beginning always shift at the same RPM all the time till you have a sense of the revs in each gear....
for MY04 it's a good rule of thumb to shift at ~4000 RPM for driving around town IMO.

hmm so it's alright to rev high in 1st?? i was told (but i forgot who..) not to ride in gear 1 for that long of a period.

as for the shifting..i'm trying rev match..but i'm afriad it might cause premature wwear&tear.

This car is made to rev! I agree that 4000 rpm is a good point to shift when around town, at least in pre 04 models it is.
