Have you checked insurance prices? I would imagine they will be ridiculous on the s2000.
Im gonna agree. your 17. the insurance prices are gonna be a lot higher for the S than the Si

why would you want to drive people around? get the two seater!

Seriously tho, if your not a smart driver... the car will bite you, and hopefully you come out safe. I know plenty of drivers from back when i was in HS who would potentially be dead if they had a car like this. Early S2000's are twitchy cars, and not a vehicle you just slide around DDing and giggle about it after if you dont know what your doing!

I got my crazy days out of the way a long time ago in my old prelude, which was a very forgiving car. Im glad I waited until 23 to get the S.

get an S, be humble about it so it doesnt burn your friends too badly, and drive it VERY VERY slowly for a while until you get used to RWD.

ap1s are easy to wreck. if you arent extremely careful for the first 6 months to a year, you'll find out the limits of the car going around a corner (ie you'll hit gravel/sand unexpectedly and oversteer into a ditch). the S2000 will make you a better driver too, but i just hope it wouldnt be through the school of hard knocks. 06+ cars will have traction control which would help that tremendously, but that costs a lot more money.

be honest with yourself. are you going to drive it hard? (i sure would if i were you.) if so, a civic si will probably be a better choice. if you want to race the mustang next to you after your friends egg you on, the civic si will be more forgiving. if you want to accelerate out of corners at 90mph, get the civic si. if youre 105% sure you will respect the car--even when it feels restrained and even boring--an s2000 will be a better choice. (you'll get to run through corners faster in the end, but you'll need to be VERY disciplined while you learn the limits for the first 6-12 months or it will bite you, HARD.) if you arent sure you have GREAT self-restraint for your age and you get the s2000, you might become "that douchebag that wrecked the s2000 his daddy bought for him."

Not like it's going to matter but if I were you I'd get the Si. It's a way more versatile car, still pretty dang fast (enought to get you into trouble), they look great, handle great and are cheaper to drive. Premium is pushing $4 a gallon up here, it'll be there within a couple months (if not sooner), fill ups will cost quite a bit less in the Si. I think the S is getting a bit.....old. I'm not nearly as attracted to it as I used to be, the Si is fresher looking and will keep you out of more trouble than the S. People hate on the S and they get trashed occasionally by jealous sorts, also as a soft top they are prone to rip offs more than a coupe and as a young guy your insurance will clean up on you if you have ANY mishaps in the S.

It's pretty tough at that age to NOT do what you want regardless of any advice given, I was the same way and bought a turbo Mustang right out of hi-school, it cost me plenty for the next 6-7 years due to so many tickets my insurance being outrageous (the more tickets, the more you pay, I had 12 on my record at one time). Also, at your age unfortunately the police will sort of be 'targeting' you if you cruising an S, even if you keep your nose MOSTLY clean you will get caught eventually.

Of course this is all one persons opinion, every one is different, maybe it'll all go really well for you with an S.

Tru... I just got my S last month and it has been a ride... RWD was totally new... I couldn't make a sharp turn and let go of the clutch like a FWD... Did a couple of tail whips scared the crap outta me... But Now i think it has made me a better driver... Just being more careful and back to the basic... This car never gets boring!

Do you play any sports??? I know having a S back then would be horrible between lacrosse and hockey... u will have no room for gear....

Well, I've had my S2k for about 6 months now so I guess I'll chime in on this thread as well.

My first car was a 2006 FG2. Loved it to death, but my dream car (within reason) has always been the s2000. I couldnt afford it right out of college, so I bought the civic.

Insurance: My AP1 is actually almost exactly the same cost to insure as my SI was. I have not had a speeding ticket in 3+ years. (and i'm 25)

Weather: I miss the SI. I've driven the AP1 in the snow and it is no picnic. The SI wasn't a snow mobile either, but it was a lot less scary. This winter taught me how to drive a RWD so much better. I have a lot of respect for this creature now.

Fuel savings: My highest MPG on the SI was 34 highway on a long road trip. The S2k.... oh god. I burn tanks of gas like it was 1997. ~22-24mpg on a good day.

Overall performance: The s2k is obviously more powerful, weighs less and handles like a dream. The SI however, is about 95% of that. It's really a close call. What made me happy when I started getting into the engine of the S2k was the fact I actually had room to do stuff. The engine bay of the SI was so freaking crammed full.

In the end it is obviously comes down to what makes you happy and what you can afford. I would try and find an S2k from a dealer with the certified warranty on it. May pay a little more than private, but I think its worth it in the end.

Best wishes and good luck with your decision!

i'm kind of in this boat too, our family just bought an si sedan, i used to have a MINI COOPER S, and they offer similar performance, but each has their ups and downs, but i'm looking to get an s2000. I'd say get the s2k, that's what i'm deciding to do.

I bought an 05 S a couple of years ago used. I was at the dealership minutes away from closing on the purchase of a gorgeous 06 habanero coupe si with nav. While talking to my salesman I notice out of the corner of my eye a berlina S, I asked him what it was(I was oblivious to what an S2k was). Within an hour the thought of buying an Si was gone and I had found my Rio AP2 in perfect condition. And to my surprise when I called my Insurance company(State Farm) coverage on the S would be CHEAPER than the Si. I was 100 percent sold from that point. I was 18 when I bought this car. Go for an AP2 OP.

i have to agree with this 100% now. dont waste your money away on that civic thats gonna turn out to be a car pooler and be trashed by careless passengers. go with a newer S. with the civic you'll be spending about 21-23k, for that price you can get a pretty good AP2. bigger, more stable, easier to daily drive., and as an added bonus, according to this month's sport compact car, the ap2 makes 24 whp more than the ap1. (ap1 owners, please dont flame me i'm quoting what i read from the magazine, i have no intention of turning this into an ap1 vs ap2 vs cr thread. *incidentally theres a difference of in peak hp between the regular ap2 and the cr, the regular ap2 is 2hp more*)

ok back on topic.....
