You'll kick yourself when you see it. Look at the picture GreenMarine posted. See how the frame around the windshield is totally black? Now look at the other pictures - in the other pictures the color of the car's body is around the windshield...

What purpose does this tape have? Why does Honda put it on? Just curious.

They put it on for looks. I don't think it serves a functional purpose.

Black cars come correct without electrical tape.

The tape was applied for asthetic purposes. The intent was to remove it when the dealer installed the "hard top" option to provide integrity of the color, and a little more wow factor when someone ponied up a couple of grand for the future option. Only problem was the hard top took a long time to come out, so the tape on a lot of cars took a fairly hard set. Some of the first installations in Japan resulted in chipped and peeled paint on the "A" pillars. As such Honda chose not to make this information public. This is why the black car (and only the black car is not "taped" at the factory). As for the guy is Australia....sorry but the Aussie cars are taped also unless they are black. The tape comes off fairly easy on a new car, but after a year or so procedd at your own risk.

Utah, that's an interesting bit of trivia. The factory put it on for the dealer's to take off. Now that's a new approach to the old term 'dealer add-on'.

Utah, sorry.. but not so. Have a look at the attached photo taken last week of a 2 week old 2002 Aussie model on one of our club runs..

Note, two things -
a). NO windshield tape - I know for a fact this is how they come from the factory.
b). Colour is Silverstone - yes, Australia still gets Silverstone for 2002 - with all red interior (dash etc..).

If you are still not convinced, here is another photo of a Silverstone S2000 taken at the recent Mebourne motor show (also 2 weeks ago) for the launch of the 2002s (we were very late getting them)

If the picture is not my s2000, click refresh until it comes up. The picture rotates among several cars.

I did mine when new. Little effort. No paint flaws.
