So what is the best way to approach a stop light....from a engine and tranny longevity stand-point? Some say just throw it into neutral and roll up using the brakes to stop, others think its best to be downshifting all the way to first while decelerating....and then some say down shift and let the clutch do some of the work stopping the car (I majorily disagree with that one).

I personally downshift while decelerating and rev-match.....

i never skip shifted before when upshifting and i feel that it is rather pointless
just shift to the next gear for a second or two then keep going up the desired gear, not too hard

personally i just coast in neutral or leave it in gear and clutch in and break

i downshift sometimes when i want to feel cool but i don't think it's really necessary and makes a lot of excessive noise

blah blah ppl talk about not being in control when in neutral but come on, it's not like i'm on the track - i'm on residential streets cruising to a dead stop and i'll take the slight risk should anything profound happen to me

xviper and woodwork covered this convincingly here.
I must say, I believe proper double-clutching would avoid this damage.

Everyone needs to look at that thread, but the most important post in all of it might just be this one:

This is pretty disturbing....I've skipped gears all my life. With the S, I'd redline 123 to get my VTEC fill, the skip to 6th. I will agree that if this is not done with a deft touch and knowledge of what your driveline is doing, you'll do certain damage. I won't try to explain how I do it personally, for fear of giving people the idea that it's ok to do so. I can also shift from 123456, and 654321, without the clutch. Only because I've worked on cars all my life, and have a well earned feel for it. But the bottom line is don't try either. I'll continue to do so, and if it gives me trouble I'll tear it down myself and post a bunch of pics for you guys.
I'm in the same boat Billman is in. I do it, and I know full well that I'm not hurting the car, but I'm not going to say how I do it, lest I encourage somebody who can't shift worth beans to try something that will tear up their car.

As the holy XVIPER said back in the day.......from the top of 2nd to 6th is about a 5000RPM drop. You need to leave the tranny out of gear, until the RPMs fall accordingly, then you can put the car in 6th. Basically, you need to rev match on the way down (instead of blipping the throttle)....thus, causing no damage. Otherwise, yes, its not healthy.

If im full throttle 9K in 2nd, go to shift into 3rd and accidentally put the lever in 5th (real easy to do mid turn) the tranny grinds and I cant get the car into 6th without alot of effort.

dont skip shifts unless you give plenty of time in between shifts

I know I've accidentally skip-shifted at least three times in my ownership, 2nd to 5th; 3rd to 6th, etc. Now, I 'm depressed and frightened. What damage have I done?

The idea that it's a flaw in the transmission design is incorrect in the extreme.
I would beg to differ.

Name me one tranny on the market today that skip shifting will destroy like it does the S. Chevy even forces skip shifting in the Corvette.

Even in the "old days" skip shifting never damaged any tranny that I am aware of. Maybe some of the exotics but I never heard of it.

This is the first an only car I have ever heard of that skip shifting is a problem. My Miatas, both 5 speeds and 6 speeds, have been skip shifted for years with no issues. .
